Cocktails with beer as the main ingredient: a long tradition in different countries – and something you could treat yourself to.

“Well, I drink my HERBS, TRIPLE HOPS STRONG BEER DARK, only at room temperature!” …

… Bet such statements are on the way in the comment column? Sure – a cold beer is and remains incredibly refreshing. But that’s not what this is about. This is about the amazing idiosyncrasy of different culinary traditions (okay, let’s face it: most of these drinks come from Mexico) where beer is used to make cocktails and drinks. And the fact that some of these are great if you’re open to new things.

Let’s go, so – not least to postpone the end of summer a bit, at least in mind: Here are 8 beer cocktails you should treat yourself to!

The classic: as it is drunk in native Mexico, in the US Southwest and now pretty much all over Central America! There are two basic variants: one with and one without clamatothe tomato juice enriched with mussel broth and herbs.

1 tbsp Tajin (or some salt and chili powder mixed)
if necessary 6 cl clamato or tomato juice or V8 (or similar vegetable juice)
1 bottle of Mexican beer
3 cl lime juice
2 shots Worcestershire sauce
2 shots of hot chili sauce
2 shots Maggi Sauce (or soy sauce)
1 lime, for garnish
Spread tajín (or salt mixture) on a small plate. Rub the rim of a pint glass with a slice of lime and dip in the chilli salt. Fill the glass with ice cubes. Add Worcestershire sauce, chilli sauce, lime juice, soy sauce and clamato (if needed) to the glass and top up with beer. Garnish with a slice of lemon.
Oh yeah:
In all drink recipes the beer must of course to freeze to be. And it is preferable to ensure that freshly squeezed Lime juice etc used. OKAY?

All quantities are approximate, ultimately it is up to your own taste to decide. Not in the mood for vegetable juice? Only the clamato omit!

In a way, the Michelada is the Mexican answer to the Bloody Mary. Here a version with a slightly smoky taste thanks to the addition of mezcal.

1 tablespoon chipotle salt
2cl mezcal
2 cl lime juice
1 cl agave syrup
5 shots of cholula hot sauce
5 shots Maggi (or soy sauce)
2 shots Worcestershire sauce
1 bottle of Modelo Especial Lager (or other Mexican beer)
1 lime, for garnish
Spread chipotle salt (or other chili-salt mixture) on a small plate. Rub the rim of a pint glass with a slice of lime and dip in it. Fill the glass with ice cubes.
All other ingredients except for the beer (!) Pour into a cocktail shaker filled with ice cubes, shake vigorously and strain into the pint glass. Carefully top up with beer. Garnish with a slice of lemon.

What could be more refreshing than a margarita? One that’s spiced up with a Mexican lager for the ultimate drink mashup!

Salt for the rim of the glasses (optional)
6cl tequila
2cl Cointreau
3 cl lime juice
Mexican beer
Lime for garnish
Make a salt rim on the beer glass if necessary. Fill with ice cubes.
Pour the tequila, Cointreau and lime juice into a cocktail shaker filled with ice cubes, shake vigorously and strain into the beer glass. Carefully top up with beer. Garnish with a lemon wedge.

Exactly: Corona + Margarita. Also Mexican car accident cocktail or Mexican bulldog cocktail mentioned, this drink may seem a little messy at first glance. But in reality, it is absolutely the perfect long drink for the summer.

6cl Tequila Blanco 100% Agave
1.5 cl Triple Sec (Grand Marnier or similar)
3 cl freshly squeezed lemon juice
3 cl freshly squeezed lime juice
3 cl sugar syrup
1 ice cold 210 ml bottle of Mexican beer
1 large beer glass (pint glass or similar)
1 straw
1 lemon wedge for garnish
In a cocktail shaker filled with ice cubes, combine tequila, triple sec, citrus juice and simple syrup and shake vigorously.
Wet the rim of a sturdy beer glass with a wedge of lime and add some salt (actually optional, because ideally you drink the drink through a straw).
Fill the glass halfway with ice cubes. Strain the contents of the cocktail shaker into the glass. Open the beer bottle and place it upside down in the glass without emptying it. Garnish with a lemon wedge.

Gin and grapefruit are a classic combination: together they form the long drink Greyhound. The last one with a salt rim is called a Salty Dog. Now if you replace the grapefruit juice with grapefruit wheat beer, you get this refreshing drink:

1 tbsp Tajín (or some salt and chili powder mixed)
6 cl gin or vodka
Schöfferhofer Grapefruit-Hefeweizen
Spread the tajín out on a plate. Wet the rim of a highball glass and dip in the chili salt. Fill the glass with ice cubes, add gin or vodka and carefully top up with the wheat beer.

A twist on the classic Paloma long drink! (Austrian Radler is recommended, although Swiss variants are also welcome, of course.)

6cl tequila
2 cl grapefruit juice
1.5 cl lime juice
1.5 cl sugar syrup
Stiegl Radler (or similar panaché)
Grapefruit twist for garnish
All ingredients except for the beer (!) Pour into a cocktail shaker filled with ice cubes, shake vigorously and strain into a long drink or Collins glass. Carefully top up with beer. Garnish with a slice of grapefruit.

Now we say goodbye to Mexico and cross the border north to the US, where the next drink is often drunk. Wherein… drinking? Or is it more of a joke? Anyway, it’s fun.

whiskey
Beer
Carefully fill 1 shot glass with whiskey. Fill a pint glass three quarters full with beer and drop the shot glass into it.

And when summer has finally said goodbye, you might be craving this cocktail classic, also featured in Ian Fleming’s James Bond novels. Something autumnal, even wintery. And something festive:

Stout (e.g. Guinness)
Champagne
Fill a champagne glass halfway with beer. Top up the rest with champagne. (It is advisable to pour the champagne into the glass with the back of a spoon.)
