Okay, WHAT the hell is a “TikTok Sushi Bake”?

watch out! A new TikTok challenge is coming. Food-Baroni is surprised by the title, but by the taste… well, see for yourself!

«Daaaad? Can we make a sushi tray? Mmm!”

That’s what the 14-year-old daughter said recently after being asked what we would cook for dinner.

And I was Gen X grandpa again ignorant (to cite a hit movie from *my* generation). What the hell is a «baking sushi” are?

The answer:

“It’s all over TikTok. And it looks SO nice.”

And for further explanation she sends me this video right after:

@gaming_foodie

30 MINUTE SUSHI BAKE⤵️ Makes 3-5 servings 1/2 lb salmon, seasoned to preference 1/2 lb imitation crab, shredded and cut into smaller pieces 3 oz cream cheese 1/4 cup Japanese mayo 1 TBSP sriracha 2-3 cups cooked rice 2 EL rice vinegar Furikake / shredded seaweed 1. Season the salmon according to preference. I seasoned mine with garlic powder, salt and black pepper. And then air fry at 400 for 9 minutes. If your salmon is thicker you may need to cook more 2. Then shred the salmon and add it to your shredded imitation crab. 3. Then add the rest of your ingredients: cream cheese, Japanese mayo & sriracha. Combine well and set aside. 4. Combine 2-3 cups of cooked rice with 2 tablespoons of rice vinegar. Mix well. Then pour rice into an ovenproof dish and flatten / create a flat – even surface. 5. Top the rice with grated seaweed or furikake. I used 3 seaweed sheets 6. Then top your rice + seaweed with your salmon mixture and spread it evenly 7. Bake at 380 for 10 minutes (roasted for 2-3 minutes optional) 8. I served my sushi bake wrapped in seaweed. I also like to put cucumbers and / or avocados in the wrap but I didn’t have those ☹️ Bon Appétittites

Okay, three things immediately struck me: First, the Helmet Baby is *incredibly* cute. Second, this dish is analogous to real sushi, like those shady American pasta corruptions (yes, right, That) to real Italian food culture. And third… this recipe, in all its mess, could turn out pretty good after all… hmm.

These are the ingredients:

(Amounts according to your own taste and common sense)

And this is how it is done:

In fact, that’s quite nice. Fine in the “unfortunately awesome” version, because I can’t quite shake the feeling of a guilty pleasure here, but for once a TikTok recipe that is edible! And also, as my daughter rightly pointed out, as a family dinner, this is an efficient solution.

(And chopping the crabmeat with scissors is a cool hack.)

(According to the Swiss school grades: 6 the best grade, 1 the worst, 4 a passing grade.)

Point average: 3.5
A slight improvement but still not enough sweet TikTok.
