Just tap and get started: Electric cars seem to be bursting with power and even outperform much more powerful models with internal combustion engines when running at traffic lights. Electric motors have enormous advantages during take-off, as they provide full torque as soon as they start.

However: this does not make them a good towing vehicle for trailers or caravans. If you want to go on vacation with your new Stromer and camper, you should consider the following when purchasing: is there a trailer load specified in the technical data? And would a clutch be available?

Should fit most streamers

The lion’s share of electric cars fail completely as towing vehicles. This is not surprising in city cars like the Mini Cooper SE, BMW i3, Honda e or electric Fiat 500e. The larger Nissan Leaf or the DS 3 Crossback E-Tense is amazing: they’re not allowed to tow anything, like the mini SUV Hyundai Kona Electric or the already rather large Kia e-Niro. And even the Porsche Taycan up to 760 hp and the technically related Audi E-Tron GT should fit when towing.

Only electric SUVs are suitable as towing vehicles (see below). But even then the differences are huge: Jaguar’s I-Pace can only tow trailers weighing up to 750 kilograms – not enough for the handful of small camper models on the market. In comparison, Tesla’s Model X handles up to 2268 kilograms. However, with a trailer weight of more than 750 kg, the driver needs a trailer test (license E). However, with the brand new and cheaper e-models, a trend seems to be reversing: VW’s ID.4 is one tonne (1.2 ton even with all-wheel drive), Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 and Kia’s EV6 It can lift 1600 kilograms.

Heavy battery, sophisticated aerodynamics

Why are electric vehicles allowed to speed but rarely tow a trailer? The main reason is the battery, which makes electric cars heavier, thereby reducing the additional trailer weight coverage. In addition, the stems are also designed around the battery in the lower body to protect it. As a result, many electric cars lack the necessary interior reinforcements that a trailer hitch would require.

And finally, the structure and power management of electric cars are designed for minimal consumption: the body shape is aerodynamically refined to reduce consumption. Even small cameras instead of large exterior mirrors can add several kilometers to the range. If you add a block called a trailer to this sophisticated overall system, range will suffer greatly.

As a result, the battery will need to be recharged much more often while on the go. Some manufacturers do not like the following rebukes from the customer and immediately refuse to tow a trailer. Is it possible to make a caravan with Stromer? For a trip to Lake Constance or Lake Biel, it is enough that the car meets the requirements. You definitely don’t want to go all the way to Portugal.

Anyone who buys an electric car for environmental reasons often travels a lot by bike. However: Especially on small electric vehicles, it is not possible to mount a bicycle rack in the rear without a hitch, because these systems are supported in the trailer coupling. A roof rack is also not usually an alternative: the Honda e or Renault Zoe, for example, is not allowed to shoulder a gram, unlike a conventional VW Polo, for example. However, some models now have special accessory couplings that can be used as support points for the carrier. But for followers, these are taboo.
