The compact Stromer ID.3 was VW’s first model to develop as an all-electric car and would become a bestseller like the Golf in the combustion engine segment. With nearly 600,000 ID models sold since the start of 2020, SUV ID.4 was the best-selling compact ID. The reason: The car was a rushed job – unfinished and immature, suffering from quality and software issues. Customers immediately noticed this, too.
Less than three years later, the ID.3 is now getting an early makeover. Improvements to the interior, charging capacity and exterior upgrades will lead to more sales. We’ve already done the make-up of the ID.3 – and we have a question: Have those in charge at VW learned from the criticism?
“They are!”, as we learned after the first seat test: Instead of surfaces resembling the body of a printer in the tactile test, there is now a nice faux leather steering wheel or foam-filled, vegan panels. The black piano lacquer blends in, but quickly turns ugly with fingerprints. The layout of the instruments is the same: a 5.3-inch screen between the steering wheel is supplemented by a head-up display; The central 12-inch touchscreen stays in place, as does the gear selector located just behind the steering wheel.
The drive remains the same as the previous model, with a single-speed gearbox and 150 kW (204 hp) electric motor – and this is perfectly normal: the ID.3 continues to accelerate, impresses with its precise steering and low noise level. higher speeds. VW added to the charging capacity, which increased to a maximum of 170 kW.
After a few short charging stops, the navigation system can now steer the route using stronger pillars. “Plug and Charge” (plug and charge) is also possible using a charge card located in the vehicle. The ID.3 Pro S’s range has also been increased to 560 kilometers – modified air intakes on the fuselage provide better aerodynamics.
Like its soon-to-be older brother ID.7, the ID.3 “Travel Assistant” uses swarm intelligence: if enough other ID clouds feed it with data, Lane Keeping Assistant only needs one lane marking to steer. Traffic sign recognition works perfectly: as soon as the engine brake approaches the speed limit, it rolls up and slows down. Adaptive cruise control accelerates and brakes independently up to a stop or still a top speed of 160 km/h. Additionally, new possible over-the-air updates will keep the latest software version 3.5 more stable.
But all improvements and revisions come at a cost: the VW ID.3 Pro S with the larger 77 kWh battery is available for CHF 44,200, while the basic Pro version with a 58 kWh battery (max. 429 km) is available for 37,800 francs. beginning. According to VW, delivery times are currently three months.
