Lucerne will be the focal point of the Swiss classic car scene for a weekend: Swiss Classic World 2023 will take place at the exhibition center from June 2-4.
Andrew FaustHead of Vehicle and Mobility

Next weekend, the biggest Swiss classic car event of the year will take place at the Lucerne Exhibition Centre: Swiss Classic World 2023 will be held here from June 2-4. All you need to live in and around historic cars, motorcycles and classic cars for three days will be the focus. Organizer Bernd Link concept: vehicles are presented authentically and without fear of contact, unlike noble events like Villa d’Este on Lake Como or Pebble Beach, California.

Among the nearly 700 vehicles on display, there are also many rare, special, expensive or historically special vehicles. They’re usually found in collectors’ garages or museum warehouses, but you can experience them up close at Swiss Classic World 2023. It’s not always Lamborghini or Ferrari – you may not have heard of the following five exclusive cars.

Popp Patent Motor Car from 1898

Only two examples of the Popp patented motor car were built between 1898 and 1900 – one surviving, now in the Lucerne Transport Museum and once at the Swiss Classic World 2023. Mercedes’ predecessor Benz & Cie. They went to Switzerland and apparently learned a lot from their motor vehicle for their own design. The two-seater is the oldest Swiss made car and has almost 5 hp.

1904 Dufaux race car

This car looks more modern than the year of manufacture indicates and is Swiss made. Genevan brothers Charles and Frédéric Dufaux built their race cars for the Gordon Bennett Cup, an annual international motor race. It was the first car to have an eight-cylinder and 12-liter engine in a row. A one-time fundraiser for its own restoration is being collected at Swiss Classic World.

Stanguellini Monoposto Formula Junior, 1960

Underneath this warm shell lies the technology of Fiat Topolino: Vittorio Stanguellini (1910-1981) was Enzo Ferrari’s (1898-1988) best friend even before the Second World War, and from 1932 he was a local in Modena (I). He was a Fiat dealer. From 1937 it produced racing cars based on Fiats, then standalone coupés and roadsters with outputs of 28 to 96 hp. Shown at the Swiss Classic World, this Formula Junior race car was considered one of the most successful in its racing class, despite only getting 78 hp from a small car engine.

Mercedes AMG 300 SEL 6.8, 1971

Was anything wild once built in a Mercedes? The “Red Sow” was made in 1971 by the tuning company AMG from a crash sample of a Mercedes 300 SEL 6.3. Exactly: AMG, the sports and gaming subsidiary of the Mercedes group, today as Mercedes-AMG.

This sophisticated Mercedes S-Class was the first successful car from the AMG tuning company founded in 1967. At first he made racing cars such as the four-door car called the “Rote Sau”, then from 1990 he developed sports versions for Mercedes. In 2005, AMG finally became a 100 percent subsidiary, now cooperating with Aston Martin and developing its own models as well. At Swiss Classic World, the replica of the lost original “Red Sow” is reminiscent of the company’s inception. Tip: Go early and see, as it’s auctioned on Saturday.

Clean C2 from 1971

This race car was made in Switzerland – but track racing here was banned 52 years ago. Race team owner Peter Sauber (79) designed the C2 as the second race car of his career as team principal, around a 1.6-liter engine with approximately 240 hp. Two examples were built, taking three wins and seven podiums. One at Swiss Classic World this weekend.
