Cycling guide: Do you always have to keep both hands on the handlebars?

Both hands should always be on the wheel while driving. Does this also apply to bikes? Or can I carry a shopping bag in one hand or hold an umbrella in the rain?

Cyclists are not allowed to let go of the steering mechanism – that’s what the law says. This means that the handlebars are completely released, that is, hands-free riding. It is therefore forbidden and can be fined 20 francs. It goes without saying that you have to let go of the handlebars with one hand to give hand signals before turning or entering the lane.

But at the same time, if I’m carrying a bag or an umbrella, I can’t sign it. Therefore, according to the law, “motorcyclists and cyclists (…) cannot carry any item that would make it impossible to issue the signs or endanger other road users”. This could be fined with 20 francs.

Neither hinder nor endanger

But in the end, it’s not just about signing. People with only one hand on the handlebar can steer and brake less. This may contradict the basic rule of law that requires “everyone (…) to act in traffic in a way that does not interfere with the correct use of the road or endanger others”. That’s why at Pro Velo we advocate transporting objects on the luggage rack or on the trailer.
