ChatGPT Inventors: AI Technology Can Destroy Humanity

Horror scenario reloaded: A group of AI experts warns that the technology carries the “risk of destruction” of humanity.

A number of leading artificial intelligence experts see the technology as a potential threat to humanity. In a statement, the undersigned calls for the risks to be taken seriously.

The message, posted on a nonprofit’s website, consists of just one sentence:

“Reducing the risk of AI destruction should be a global priority, alongside other risks of societal proportions, such as pandemics and nuclear war.”

The organization cites its use in warfare, for example in the air or in the development of new chemical weapons, as potential dangers of artificial intelligence.

The San Francisco-based company also warns Center for AI Safety (Center for AI Security) about the spread of false information using technology and a future in which humanity could become completely dependent on machines.

Who drew this?

The head of ChatGPT inventor OpenAI, Sam Altman, also signed the short statement on the website. The chatbot ChatGPT, which can formulate sentences at a human level, has generated a new hype around AI in recent months.

A few weeks ago, another organization published an open letter, signed by tech billionaire Elon Musk, among others, proposing to pause the development of artificial intelligence for six months.

The purpose of the pause should be to find regulatory approaches for the technology. It was later revealed that Musk had just started his own AI company.

Meanwhile, the EU wants to win over ChatGPT developer OpenAI for voluntary self-regulation of the AI industry. Industry Commissioner Thierry Breton will therefore meet CEO Sam Altman in San Francisco in the coming weeks, the committee said.

Breton presented a similar initiative last week. Due to the rapid development of this technology, time has to be bridged until the “AI Act” is passed by the international community.

According to further information, the implementation of the planned EU legislation is also on the agenda of the talks between Breton and Altman.

Altman recently threatened to pull his company out of Europe if the industry became overregulated. Shortly afterwards, he retracted his statement.
