If you are taking your dog for a trip in the car, you need to pay attention to a few things so that the tour does not become a grind for the animal. Regulations regarding transportation are regulated in the animal protection law. Although primarily intended for livestock, they apply equally to domestic animals. In addition, people traveling with animals on public roads must comply with the provisions of the Road Traffic Act (SVG) and Traffic Rules Regulation (VRV). To arrive at your destination safely and comfortably with your dog, you must avoid these five mistakes.
To enter the EU, the dog must have a microchip. A legible tattoo will be accepted for dogs with a birth date before July 3, 2011. Additionally, dogs must have a valid rabies vaccine (at least 21 days prior to departure). Dog owners must carry a veterinarian-stuffed pet passport (rabies stamp and chip or identification number). Dogs entering Norway, England and Finland should also be treated against tapeworm infestation (Echinococcus multilocularis). Treatment should be done 120 to 24 hours before entry.
Carrying a dog in a car should be safe, type-appropriate and stress-free for passengers and four-legged friends. In the event of an accident, unsecured dogs can become fatal. An unsecured dog weighing 19 kilograms can be thrown out of the vehicle with a force of 400 kilograms in case of impact at 50 km/h. Dogs can be secured to metal or plastic boxes, net cages, collapsible boxes or harnesses for attachment to harness. Metal boxes provide optimum protection. Plastic boxes are easy to clean. Mesh cages, folding boxes or harnesses pose a risk of injury to the dog.
Pets are also considered cargo, according to the SVG. Feeding and petting should be avoided while driving and it is forbidden to place animals on the driver’s lap. On long trips, you should take a break every two hours and walk the dog.
Make sure no one will be disturbed, distracted, or endangered by the dog. If the dog behaves abnormally and you are alone with him in the car: stop as soon as possible and look at the animal – but do not try to look at or touch the dog while driving. Eyes should stay on the road.
Even in the spring, it can be life-threatening for the dog in the car due to the sun’s rays. Therefore, always park in the shade. According to the Animal Welfare Regulation, pets are only allowed in the car during transport. When stopping at rest stops, only leave the dog in the car for a very short time. Take fresh water with you: Dogs cannot sweat and have to regulate their temperature balance by panting. To do this, they need to drink a lot.
