Social engineering attack: Bitcoin Suisse hit by data theft

The crypto service provider Bitcoin Suisse has been hit by a data theft. According to a statement from the Zug-based company, historical customer data may have been exposed in a so-called social engineering attack on a system that has not been used since 2018.

The security of clients’ assets and Bitcoin Suisse Online will not be compromised in any way, the company assured in a statement published over the Whitsun weekend. Customers have not disclosed user passwords or two-factor authentication (2FA). All other systems and operations are also not affected in any way.

«Limited amount of archived customer data»

An initial estimate of the incident shows that it involves a “limited amount of archived customer data (including correspondence) from 2013 to early May 2018”. A task force has been set up to thoroughly analyze the situation, investigate possible effects and prevent such an incident from happening again in the future. Bitcoin Suisse works closely with cybersecurity experts and the responsible authorities. Potentially affected customers were also informed separately.

In a social engineering attack, employees are often manipulated into handing over sensitive information to the attackers. (aeg/sda/awp)
