In October, BMW’s new 5 Series will kick off with us. The newly revealed Blick could already sit inside. The biggest surprise is the design: no big front grille, no bulky, almost vertical front, no combative look like last time with the 7 Series or mega SUV XM, for example.

As always, BMW prefers to return to understated elegance with the 5 Series, which should not let existing customers’ cars look old and should not deter new customers. That’s why there are aerodynamic shapes, a front part clearly borrowed from the smaller 3 Series, the typical Hofmeister curvature of the rear window pillar and an elegant rear with narrow LED light strips.

Other versions only in 2024

When it comes to driving, petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid and electric options are available. The combination version, called the Touring, won’t arrive until next spring, and the new BMW M5 probably won’t be available until the end of 2024 as the most powerful top version.

Those who can’t wait until then should flirt with the most powerful electric model, the i5 M60 xDrive. Compulsory all-wheel drive delivers 601 hp (442 kW) and 795 Nm of maximum torque, which can be increased to 820 Nm in boost. It takes 3.8 seconds from a stationary take-off to accelerate to 100 km/h and then to 230 km/h. This is offset by an electric range of approximately 455 kilometers. However, most electric buyers will prefer the smaller i5 eDrive 40, which produces 340 hp (250 kW) and is limited to 193 km/h. Range: 477 to 582 kilometers. The maximum charging speed for all models is 205 kilowatts (kW).

Four-cylinder and Stromer for a start

The petrol engine 520i, with a two-litre 208 hp (153 kW) four-cylinder turbocharged and 48-volt electrical system, will be available at launch. The 197 hp (145 kW) diesel is available with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. New to the chassis are optional electronic dampers, roll stabilization, rear-wheel steering and rear-axle air suspension. At level 3 piloted driving is excluded, but there is an extended highway assist for Germany, the USA and Canada up to 130 km/h. A world first: Active lane change assistant that can be triggered instantly. No great added value in everyday life, but always an impressive spectacle effect.

More space thanks to new size

The new BMW i5 has grown because at 5.06 meters it plays in the league where the regular-wheelbase top-of-the-line 7 Series was once on the road. In addition, the competitor to the Audi A6 and Mercedes E-Class has become wider (plus 3.2 cm) and has a longer wheelbase (plus 2.0 cm to 3.00 m). Anyone familiar with current BMW models will find few surprises in the interior. The curved screen with two screens of 12.3 and 14.9 inches is already known from the iX, i7 and 3 series. As with the 7 Series, the new 5 Series surprisingly lacks, at least, an optional passenger screen.

It launches with the new 5 Series on October 21, but prices have yet to be determined. Other versions will also be available from spring 2024, such as the 299 hp (220 kW) four-cylinder 530e and the 489 hp (360 kW) six-cylinder 550e xDrive, which can travel more than 90 kilometers. purely electrical. The previous petrol engines 530i and 540i with 258 HP and 381 HP are no longer available in Europe. Nor is there a regular sunroof for the European market anymore – it promises a wide panoramic roof with a spare louver.
