The most beautiful car of the 1990s is the Ferrari F355 GTS. An analysis of a British comparison portal offers even more surprises.

Design is a matter of taste – also or especially in cars. If you ask car fans about the most beautiful models of all time, the same old models rarely make it to the podium. British online comparison portal Confused.com took a scientific approach to the analysis of 370 cars and examined vehicle fronts for symmetry, called the golden section. Because the more symmetrical a face is, the more attractive it is, and that’s applied to cars here. The results of the research contain some surprises:

1940s: Ferrari 166MM Zagato Panorama

In 1949, the Panoramica was not only the first Ferrari designed by Milan design company Zagato, it was also Ferrari’s first coupe. The cabin, which was left far behind, was also called a greenhouse because of the construction made with plenty of plexiglass. Of the decade’s winners, this is the one closest to the golden mean, with “only” 88.27 percent.

1950s: Chrysler Plymouth Fury

When it launched in 1959 – movie fans know the predecessor model, which is visually very similar to the horror mobile “Christine” – the Fury from Chrysler subsidiary Plymouth brought with it everything that makes it a true American flagship: chrome and sheet metal can be seen. , tail fins and a 5.9-liter V8 under the endless hood. But why is Fury the prettiest of the decade? We don’t know him. But its rate in the golden ratio: 95.3 percent.

1960s: Bizzarrini 5300 GT Strada

Not only does this car look extremely sporty and elegant (ratio: 98%), it’s also extremely rare: First, Automobili Bizzarrini, seven years before its founder Giotto Bizzarrini (95 today and designer of the legendary Ferrari) (1962-1969) ) had. 250 GTO) had to file for bankruptcy. Second, there are still three copies of the 5300 GT Strada road version worldwide. The value of the vehicle should now be in the millions.

1970s: Mercedes-Benz C 111 II

Numerous blank checks were received by Mercedes at the time. However, the C 111 remained an experimental vehicle, breaking many records in various versions (including a top speed of 404 km/h) and testing technologies, pop-up headlights and materials such as turbodiesel and Wankel (read more here: The most spectacular gull-wings of all time) ). Unfortunately, it never went into mass production: with a rate of 99.33 percent, the C 111 took second place among all vehicles examined.

1980s: Lamborghini Jalpa P350

After Lamborghini’s bankruptcy in 1979, Jalpa, the cheaper competitor to the Ferrari Dino 246 and Porsche 911, would better use production at the Sant’Agata Bolognese (I) plant in the early 1980s. Just 4.22 meters long and with a 255 hp, 3.5-liter V8, the Jalpa, despite receiving good marks in test reports, failed customers: only 410 were produced in just three years of production – despite its golden average rating. over 98 percent!

1990s: Ferrari F355 GTS

While surprisingly similar to its predecessor, the 348, the F355, introduced in 1994, was Ferrari’s transition into modern times. New technologies have provided better handling and higher driving performance. The “entry-level” Ferrari, for example, accelerated to 100 km/h in about 4.7 seconds with a 381 hp V8 engine.

2000s: Lamborghini Gallardo Coupe

There’s no question: The Gallardo, introduced in 2004 by star designer Luc Donckerwolke (56, today Hyundai-Kia Group Head of Design), is a sports car with clear, powerful lines like straight out of a picture book (rate: 99.2%). Winning multiple awards for its design, the Gallardo is considered Lamborghini’s entry-level model with a five-liter V10 (500 hp) below the V12-powered Murciélago.

2010s: McLaren 720S

The McLaren 720S, introduced in 2017, is doubly surprising: according to Confused analysis, it is not only the most beautiful car of the 2010s, but also the closest to the golden ratio with an incredible 99.73 percent. This makes the 720 hp Brit the most statistically attractive vehicle out of the 370 candidates reviewed. Was there some British national pride involved? But all we have to say is: Congratulations!

2020s: McLaren GT

In the decade that was only one year old, a McLaren has once again topped the design podium. The GT is not only beautiful and fast (620 hp, 0-100 km/h in 3.2 seconds), it is also practical: It offers up to 420 liters of storage space almost entirely under the glass dome – arguably great for a particularly attractive vehicle. a sports car!
