Electric cars for the whole family – 11 Stromer with space for children, pets and luggage

Spacious e-cars with space for at least seven people were scarce. But the choice is slowly increasing. An overview.
Oliver Wietlisbach

The family is growing, the four-legged friend must be able to travel comfortably, there is often a lot to transport or the daughter’s football team has an away game. There are many reasons to look for a seven-seater electric family car with an extra-large trunk.

However, popular electric family cars such as Tesla’s Model Y, VW’s ID.4 or Skoda’s Enyaq can accommodate up to five people. If it is a bit larger, the selection becomes clear.

After all, the range is becoming increasingly diverse and the cheapest seven-seaters are no longer completely unaffordable. As a new car, they are available from 40,000 francs, with the third row of seats often only available at an additional cost.

Citroen e-Berlingo

Citroën’s e-Berlingo is available in two lengths (4.40 or 4.75 metres). The spacious and relatively inexpensive Stromer can optionally be ordered with a third row of seats and seven seats. The family car fits no less than 775 liters of luggage with the practical sliding doors on both sides. When the rear seat and front passenger seat are folded down, the load volume increases to 4,000 litres.

Citroën specifies the range at 280 kilometers. That is significantly less than with many other e-cars, but sufficient for the vast majority of daily journeys. Under ideal conditions, the 50 kWh battery can be charged to 80 percent in 30 minutes with the fast charger.

  • Range (WLTP): 280 km
  • Boot volume: 775 or 1050 liters in the XL model (max. load volume 4000 liters with folded seats)
  • Seats: 5 to 7
  • Price: from 37,900 CHF

An alternative is the larger Citroën e-Spacetourer with space for up to nine people.

Kia EV9

Kia’s upcoming electric flagship EV9 will come with three rows of seats. The five-meter-long mega-SUV should be available as a seven- or six-seater by the end of the year. The South Koreans have not yet announced the price.

The EV9 comes with 77 and 99 kWh batteries. The larger battery should enable a range of up to 541 kilometers.

  • Range (WLTP): 541 km
  • Trunk volume: unknown
  • Seats: 6 to 7
  • Price: unknown (the EV9 should be available from the end of 2023)

Mercedes EQB

The 4.68 meter long Mercedes EQB is actually a five-seater, but can also be configured as an improvised seven-seater for an additional cost. The third row of seats is only suitable for children and persons up to 165 cm tall.

  • Range (WLTP): 469 km
  • Trunk volume: 495 litres, max. 1710 litres
  • Seats: 5 to 7
  • Price: from CHF 60,500 (surcharge for the 3rd row of seats: CHF 1,500)

Mercedes EQV

The Mercedes minibus is to some extent the larger luxury version of the Citroën e-Berlingo. Instead of five to seven, six to eight people fit in the electric V-Class. As expected, the Germans have a more elegant interior and the more powerful battery ensures a longer range.

  • Range (WLTP): 302 to 378 km
  • Trunk volume: 610 to 5010 litres
  • Seats: 6 to 8
  • Price: from CHF 79,100

Too expensive? Significantly cheaper electric family vans with only five seats are the new Mercedes EQT and the similar Renault Kangoo, which is available from around 40,000 francs.

Opel Combo-e Life

The family car from Opel is available in both sizes with five or seven seats. The space miracle technically corresponds to Citroën’s e-Berlingo and Peugeot’s e-Rifter, all of which come from the Stellantis group. The three high-roof station wagons have the same dimensions and differ only slightly in appearance and price.

  • Range (WLTP): 293 km
  • Boot volume: 597 or 850 liters and up to 4000 liters in the long version with folded seats
  • Seats: 5 to 7
  • Price: from 41,470 CHF

Opel Zafira-e Life

The Zafira is a practical minibus with space for up to nine people. It is the sibling of Citroën’s e-Spacetourer, Peugeot’s Traveler, Toyota’s Proace and Fiat’s Ulysse, which are all based on the same technical platform. With the small battery, the range is 224 kilometers, with the large battery a maximum of 322 km.

  • Range (WLTP): 224 / 322 km
  • Boot volume: 640 or 1060 liters and up to 4900 liters in the long version with the seats removed
  • Seats: 9
  • Price: from CHF 53,720

Peugeot and Rifter

The e-Rifter is Peugeot’s counterpart to the Citroën Berlingo and Opel Combo-e Life. Depending on the model, the high-roof station wagon is 4.40 or 4.75 meters long.

  • Range (WLTP): 282 km
  • Boot volume: 571 or 806 liters and up to 4000 liters in the long version with folded seats
  • Seats: 5 to 7
  • Price: from 39,990 CHF

Tesla Model X

Just over five feet long, Tesla’s luxury SUV can be configured as a 5, 6 or 7 seater. In the 7-seater variant, the seats in the second and third rows can be folded down.

  • Range (WLTP): 576 km
  • Trunk volume: 425 to 2314 litres
  • Seats: 5 to 7
  • Price: from 100,490 CHF

Toyota Proace City Verso

The Toyota Proace City is almost identical in construction to the Citroën Berlingo, Opel Combo-e Life and Peugeot Rifter family vans presented earlier. The bodywork is almost identical for all models, only the front is adapted per brand.

  • Range (WLTP): 280 km
  • Boot volume: 571 or 806 liters and up to 4000 liters in the long version with folded seats
  • Seats: 5 to 7
  • Price: from CHF 42,400

VolvoEX90

Volvo also has a five meter long seven-seater for the extended family on offer. The all-new luxury SUV EX90 is available to order, but will likely not ship until 2024.

  • Range (WLTP): up to 600 km
  • Trunk volume: max. 1915 litres
  • Seats: 7
  • Price: from CHF 111,750

VW ID Buzz

The previously available VW bus ID.Buzz has only five seats. However, VW is planning a longer version with a third row of seats and space for seven people. The larger ID.Buzz is expected to be rolled out this year, further details are not yet known. It is already clear that it will not be cheap. The five-seater bus already costs 70,000 francs.

  • Range (WLTP): unknown
  • Trunk volume: unknown
  • Seats: 7
  • Price: unknown

Or else?

The list of electric seven-seaters is not exhaustive and new models are constantly being added. Next year, among other things Hyundai Ioniq7.

Skoda leaves more time for an electric seven-seater. The Skoda 7S will not be announced until 2026.

In April, the Czechs presented the Vision 7S concept car, which gives a preview of the seven-seater planned for 2026. The family SUV must have a range of more than 600 kilometers.

An overview of all currently available and upcoming seven-seaters can be found in the Electric Vehicle Database.
