Carlo Abarth (1908-1979) sold the Italo sports brand to Fiat in 1971. Abarth soon became a decal on Fiat sports models. In 2007 came the rebirth that promised a lot but offered little: Sure, the Abarth versions of the 500 (picture) are absolutely fantastic and in great demand. But for over a decade always the same, freshly cooked. Otherwise, there was the rapidly disappearing version of Abarth of the 124 Spider. New or exclusive to Abarth? Not in sight. It doesn’t go well forever.

Carl FW Borgward (1890-1963) founded the fifth largest German automobile brand and then got it wrong: the overpriced luxury sedan P 100 and the lousy Arabella, finished in 1961. Borgward’s grandson finds partners in China for the 2014 Renaissance. The two SUVs (Image: BX7) are getting off to a good start in 2016. But quality is lacking, sales are crashing. Borgward will be sold in 2019 and again in 2020 (full story here) – that’s it.

Here it is now for the second time, the oldest Japanese car brand still in existence: the DAT brand, founded in 1914, was called Datsun from 1932 (here the date), taken over by Nissan and became the cheap and export name of Nissan. From 1984 the Datsun was renamed Nissan – to relaunch the Datsun with the Go (picture) as a cheap label in 2013. However, Datsun had a hard time in India, for example, and is therefore now being sacrificed again.

Marc Birkigt (1878–1953) of Geneva founded what was once considered the best thing money could buy in Barcelona. The economic crisis broke Hispano-Suiza in 1938. There have been two revival attempts over the course of ten years – from Zug and Spain. The Swiss project seems to have slowed down, with the Spanish project showing prototypes at least (Image: Hispano Suiza Carmen Boulogne). Does this really work in the series? To wait.

Perhaps the 2002 Maybach (pictured) would have succeeded had it been launched as a mega Mercedes. But Swabians wanted to stink against VW’s Bentley and BMW’s Rolls-Royce, whose name has been buried since 1941. It was over ten years later. Today, Maybach is a success – at least from an accounting standpoint. aspect? With a trick: If you want the mega-long S-Class or the best GLS, you will inevitably buy the Maybach – because both are only available out there. That’s why every sixth S-Class is a Maybach.

Lost Swedish luxury brand Saab entered 2012 due to their stubbornness and failure to understand its owner, GM. Sino-Swedish NEVS has taken the remnants and has been wanting to bring the electric Saab 9-3 II since 2013 (!). In the meantime, the money ran out, and the original parent company Saab AB (aircraft manufacturer) then acquired the naming rights. NEVS 9-3 (image) is said to be sold out. But only the old 9-3 with an electric motor.

From 1947 the German brand Veritas celebrated its racing victories. But the brand remained so expensive and small, road cars were never a hit – and it was gone in 1953. German Vermot AG wanted to revive this brand with the Veritas RS III (picture). A prototype with a BMW engine was built in 2008 (Veritas has also used BMW technology in the past) and work will begin in 2010. But in the end a small series of 600 hp flounder did not happen, it went bankrupt.
