One in six new cars sold in Switzerland is electric. In the first quarter of 2023, the share of all-electric vehicles in new redemptions was 17.4 percent; overall, alternative drive vehicles had a market share of 54 percent. Conversely, this also means that more than 80 percent of Swiss women have yet to decide on an electric car. “In recent years, factors such as price and range have deterred many people from buying electric cars,” says Alberto Sanz de Lama, Managing Director of Swiss online marketplace Autoscout24.
A research team from the University of Lucerne, Autoscout24, St. Gallen and Zurich Insurance, the Swiss Mobility Monitor identified in 2023 the reasons that currently prevent new car buyers from purchasing electric vehicles. For the representative study, 1052 people were asked about their mobility behavior at the beginning of February. Surprisingly, the main reason cited for not using electric cars is the lack of public charging stations. “The options for car charging at home have been classified as the most important aspect of the transition to an electric car, and this applies to all generations,” says Reto Hofstetter, head of research at the University of Lucerne.
For Swiss women, the wall box in the house is decisive for the transition. For landlords, it’s just a matter of cost, but by the end of 2021, 61 percent of households in Switzerland live in rental apartments. In such superstructures, the possibility of charging is primarily dependent on the homeowner’s willingness to invest. “Tenants do not currently have the right to charge a home fee. In most cases, they are not free to decide whether or not to install a charging station, but they have to hope for the goodwill of their homeowners,” says Sanz de Lama. Without a strategy to equip private charging stations, the skepticism of many Swiss will delay the transition to electromobility. lack of public charging infrastructure, insufficient range of vehicles, very high purchase prices and lack of test drive opportunities.
Other results of the research: Almost one in ten people has bought a car online. Only two percent of new car customers use car subscriptions. And especially Gen Z, born after 1995, show a high willingness to use car-sharing offers or car subscriptions instead of using their own cars in the future.
