Artificial intelligence (AI) applied to education asks questions, at a time when it never ceases to amaze with its functionality every day. Can it kill students’ creativity?
dr. César Poyatos, a professor at the Autonomous University of Madrid, believes that artificial intelligence is a means of acquiring knowledge, another source of information that students will rely on for assigned projects.
The expert emphasizes that since the advent of the Internet, There has never been a revolution as big as the one that this technology has generated today.
“We are living under a tsunami. Of course we wonder if it is capable of creating many things, why are we human beings left? But what it does is identify and create patterns. It does not create because what it does is mimic human behavior,” Poyatos revealed during the activity Ciditica of the Technological University of Panama (UTP).
Poyatos believes that the impact of artificial intelligence is on creativity It will depend on how the learning experience is planned for the students.
Accordingly, he added that generative artificial intelligence will enable activities that were previously unimaginable in the classroom, while also opening up a range of opportunities for integration.
He adds that one of its advantages is the possibility of personalizing the learning experience adapted to the needs of each student. It also promotes inclusion as people with special needs will have material available in more acceptable formats.’
9%
of new jobs by 2025 would be created by the artificial intelligence industry.
40%
of consumers, according to Hubspot, believe that artificial intelligence improves their lives in some way.
Other advantages it would have in education include cooperation in correcting homework, instant feedback and virtual assistants (chatbots), which provide personalized support to students.
However, there are also some drawbacks. In this sense, Poyatos reminds that artificial intelligence can also have political or racist prejudices, taking into account that it was trained by humans.
In the same way, one should take care of the violation of the student’s privacy, technological dependence and we must not forget the gap it could cause.
“These technologies are so advanced that they can mark a gap like the one created by the Internet, between those cultures, organizations and environments with access and knowledge and those without. This will mark a different development,” added Poyatos.
The teacher points out that artificial intelligence must be used ethically and its good use implies citation when resorted to.
“You have to have critical and analytical thinking to question the information we receive from artificial intelligence,” he stressed.
For his part, Dr. Clifton Clunie, director of the Center for Research, Development and Innovation in Information and Communication Technologies (Ciditic), He pointed out the revolution and the stage to be discussed caused by artificial intelligence.
The teacher stated that before tools such as ChatGPT appeared, artificial intelligence was always used to support various activities in the educational field.
“These scenarios involve challenges in terms of ethics and data privacy. They are key elements in the current debates about their application in education,” said Clunie.
