US authorities are taking action against Facebook group Meta

The US consumer protection authority FTC wants to impose new restrictions on the Facebook group Meta. Meta should be prohibited from releasing new products or features without being reviewed by a data protection regulator, the FTC announced Wednesday.

The group may also no longer be allowed to commercially use data from users under the age of 18. Meta criticized the plans as a political move and wants to fight back.

The currently three FTC members will decide on the proposals for Meta to comment on in the process. Meta can then go to court.

The FTC is accusing Meta of violating data protection rules, which in turn have been charged for violations. For example, in some cases software developers had unwarranted access to user data. The Facebook group last received further data protection requirements in 2020. (sda/dpa)
