Let’s go back 75 years: After signing the import contract on April 29, 1948, Volkswagen AG employees drove the first 25 VW Beetles to Switzerland from Wolfsburg (Germany) on the almost empty German autobahn to the Swiss border near Lörrach/Riehen.

There, on the Swiss side of the border fence, Amag founder Walter Haefner (1910-2012) and the first Swiss VW dealers were waiting for the mouse gray and black Bugs to be cleared. After going through customs, they paid cash for the cars, went home and delivered the first Bugs to their customers. In just eight months until the end of 1948, another 1,365 VW Beetles entered Switzerland – more vehicles than any other brand in a full year.

Joint caravan to Lucerne

75 years later, Amag celebrates this birthday with two anniversary trailers on Saturday, April 29th: 75 VW Bulli types T1 and T2 depart from Amag’s historic birthplace in Schinznach-Bad AG at 9am. At the same time, another convoy of 75 VW Beetles moves through the Bernese Seeland in Aarberg BE. Meeting for lunch at Willisau LU shortly before noon, the two caravans set off for Lucerne, the Swiss Transport Museum, starting at 13:00. 150 historic Volkswagens are expected to be beautifully lined up on the museum grounds, re-polished and then awarded by a jury between 2:30 PM and 4:00 PM.

Moderated by Nik Hartmann (50), this party for invited guests with a show by snowboarder, musician and brand ambassador Pat Burgener (28) at the Transport Museum in Lucerne is also the start signal for the special exhibition “75 years of VW” . Switzerland”.
