Seat subsidiary Cupra started at the beginning of 2018. It is now the fastest growing car brand in Europe. This is probably mainly due to the design, which is clearly different from the classic VW design. To ensure that the young brand of the VW Group remains on the road to success, it must become a pure electric car manufacturer by 2030.
First comes the second electric car after the previous compact car Cupra Born: it bears the name Tavascan and has now been unveiled on the sidelines of the Formula E race in Berlin.
Developed in Barcelona, the Cupra Tavascan will be built at Volkswagen’s new electric car factory in China. It is inspired by the 2019 IAA study of the same name and should go on sale in the summer of 2024, according to the manufacturer. Cupra hasn’t named any prices yet.
With a length of 4.64 meters, the Tavascan plays in the upper compact class and makes its debut as an elegant SUV coupe. The design is unique inside and out, but the technology comes from the VW Group and therefore uses well-known components.
This applies to the 77 kilowatt-hour battery for a range of up to 549 kilometers to the 15-inch screen on the center console and the two engine variants. The Cupra will initially be available as a rear-wheel drive car with an electric motor and 210 kW or as a four-wheel drive car with two motors and a system power of 250 kW.
The performance data corresponds to the recently presented VW ID.7 sedan. In terms of performance, the Tavascan trumps all previously available VW Group e-cars by far. At the same time, sooner or later there will probably also be versions with weaker 150 and 170 kW engines, as is the case, for example, in the smaller Cupra Born.
With the combination of design and suitability for everyday use with five seats and a 540 liter trunk, the Tavascan can challenge not only competitors such as Renault Mégane E-Tech or Nissan Ariya, but also group relatives such as VW ID.5 or Skoda Enyaq .
