You can’t see or smell an important premiere in the Mercedes-Maybach EQS 680 SUV. The leather in which the luxury electric car is equipped is completely vegetable-tanned – coffee bean husks are used as the tanning agent. To ensure the process is consistently sustainable, the cleaned water flows back into natural water bodies. In addition, the Swabian automaker saves 45 kilograms of minerals in each vehicle by not using salt while protecting the leather.
Mercedes is now fully committed to sustainability when it comes to luxury. Suppliers have to disclose their supply chains, not only for the raw materials of electric batteries, but also for leather, and animals must come from raising their animals according to their species. When it comes to metals, there is also an increasing focus on recycling.
Interestingly, the EQS is not a luxury sedan, but the EQS SUV that formed the basis of the first all-electric Mercedes-Maybach ever. “Mercedes-Maybach customers are looking for something special and our goal is to exceed their high expectations. The Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV combines our claim to leadership in digitalization and electric mobility with our focus on the luxury segment,” explains Mercedes CEO Ola Källenius (53).
You can travel like a king, especially at the back of the 5.12 meter long electric flagship. Sitting in the wide padded leather seats, we feel like we are in the business class of an intercontinental jet. There are of course ventilation and massage functions, along with shoulder and neck warming and a special calf massage. Wooden elements are tactilely appealing, and a special compartment in the center console cools champagne from silver-plated glasses.
Two 11.6-inch monitors provide entertainment, and with Maybach’s own tablet in the back you can finish watching the movie you started outside of the SUV. The SUV’s command center is already at the rear: cameras use gestures to recognize passengers’ wishes, and second-row drivers also enter the navigation destination for the driver if necessary.
The lavishly decorated interior can only be enjoyed when it is truly quiet. The Mercedes EQS SUV is not inherently noisy. But the Maybach version makes everything noticeably quieter and more comfortable. A hatch seals the boot up to the lower edge of the rear window and significantly reduces the noise level. In addition to the additional insulation materials, the curtains on the panoramic glass ceiling ensure that the air turbulence does not disturb the peace and quiet in the interior. The light can also be converted to living room lighting so that the atmosphere is accordingly warm.
Of course, the Maybach EQS 680 SUV can also drive and has more than enough motorisation, with 650 hp (484 kW) and a maximum torque of 950 Newton meters. The luxury SUV accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 4.4 seconds and reaches a top speed of 210 km/h. A range of up to 600 kilometers puts discerning passengers at ease, and the ultra-comfortable Maybach driving mode ensures smooth progress.
Other special features of the luxury electric car are the standard MBUX hyper-display with special Maybach animations, the two-tone paint and the crowned star on the hood that guarantees a proper look. But too much grandeur and power comes at a price: Based on the familiar EQS SUV, we estimate the Maybach variant should start well over 200,000 francs when it launches in November.
