Last weekend we stopped in front of a construction site and set off when the traffic light turned green. However, a few meters later, on a road that enters the construction site from the right, suddenly another car is driving right in front of us. It’s been quite some time since my theory test, so my question to the experts is: Does the right of way also apply in the traffic light area of ​​a construction site?

Even those who have just passed the theory test do not know all the traffic rules. Especially when the questions are only learned by rote with one of the many apps, as many young drivers do when preparing for the exam.

This can still come in handy for passing the exam. However, practice shows that the right of way in temporary traffic light areas such as construction sites is not known by many drivers and raises questions. Just like you did last weekend.

Traffic lights are very important

So what applies on a road where there is always a right of way but traffic is temporarily controlled by a traffic light system? Who has the right of way when a (neighborhood) street enters the construction site from the right?

Without traffic lights – or if they’re not working or just flashing amber – priority signals and signs basically regulate the right of way. If these are missing, legal priority applies. However, as soon as an active traffic signaling system is established, whether temporary or not, it clearly regulates the right of way. Right-of-way signs and markings are irrelevant in this case. And the right of way does not apply. In your particular case, the driver entering from the right would not have the right of way.
