“An AI that absolutely strives for truth”: what Musk plans to do with TruthGPT

American billionaire Elon Musk wants to counter companies like Microsoft and Google in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). “I’m going to start something called TruthGPT.”

That said the head of the electric car company Tesla and the online service Twitter in an interview with the American broadcaster Fox News that was broadcast on Monday evening (local time). It is “an AI that absolutely strives for the truth and tries to understand the essence of the universe”.

The versatile AI application ChatGPT from the American start-up OpenAI is currently causing fundamental changes in many areas. Musk co-founded OpenAI in 2015, but left the company in 2018. Microsoft has now pledged billions to invest in OpenAI and is using the start-up’s technology for its internet search engine Bing.

Musk criticized in his interview that ChatGPT is programmed to produce “politically correct” results and is therefore a lie. In addition, artificial intelligence as a whole “has the potential to destroy civilization”. You may eventually decide to “exterminate people”. TruthGPT should therefore work like humans who want to protect chimpanzee habitat, although they have the option to “hunt and kill” the apes all together.

Call for AI development

A few weeks ago, Musk joined a call from experts in an open letter calling for a general suspension of the development of AI technologies. The development break should be used to improve regulations for AI so that its use is safe. In March, Musk founded X.Ai, an AI company based in the US state of Nevada.

Large companies such as Google, Microsoft and Meta have been working on AI programs for years, for example for translations, searches and targeted advertisements.

Musk said on Fox News that he was close friends with Google co-founder Larry Page. “He really seemed to want a digital superintelligence as soon as possible, actually a digital god,” Musk said. But with AI you can’t just “shoot off and hope for the best”. (sda/afp)
