What VW’s new mid-range electric vehicle ID.7 will look like has been a well-kept secret until now. Even when we were allowed to take our first test drive two weeks ago, we didn’t know what the ID.7 looked like under its special camouflage. Now, at its official world premiere at Auto China in Shanghai, the ID.7 has finally made its debut and the ultimate secrets will be revealed.

Since the ID.7 is considered the Passat’s electric successor in the VW Group (even if the current model is still being produced), it should also meet the needs of a Passat. In other words: be practical as a popular sales representative car and above all “eat” miles. Only: Based on the MEB modular system, the VW Stromer wasn’t exactly perfect as a range marvel.

Range up to 700 kilometers

This will now change with the new ID.7. According to VW, it should exceed the 600km range of a Hyundai Ioniq 6 or Nio ET7 and cover up to 700km. This is made possible by particularly sophisticated aerodynamics. So it’s not surprising that the teardrop-shaped ID.7 silhouette is strongly reminiscent of the Ioniq 6.

Despite these aerodynamic imperatives, VW designers have managed to give the electric Passat its own lines. “We are particularly proud of the bug. Because what you destroy at the front you cannot recover at the rear,” quotes VW designer Daniel Scharfschwerdt, a well-known designer principle. The ID.7 achieves a drag coefficient of 0.23 in the wind tunnel and is therefore almost on par with the previously mentioned Hyundai Ioniq 6 or Nio ET7 (both 0.21).

Significantly faster load times

Two battery types are available for the 286 hp (210 kW) and 545 Nm-powered VW mid-range electric vehicle: From autumn, the ID.7 Pro will have a battery with a capacity of 77 kWh (82 kWh gross). . And an 85 kWh battery (91 kWh gross) in the ID7 Pro S next year. Not only do they offer significantly more range, but they also offer higher charging speeds. 170 kilowatts with the ID.7 Pro, 200 kilowatts with the Pro S. For optimum short charging times, the batteries are pre-conditioned and kept at 23 degrees Celsius at all outside temperatures. This also means that the battery is fully charged only when it is clear that the car will be transported soon and the charge level is not permanent.

But progress has also been made in the infotainment system: a 15-inch screen forms the command center in the cockpit, supplemented by a narrow strip of digital displays behind the steering wheel and a standard head-up display with augmented reality functions on the windshield. Operation is much easier and more intuitive than before. There is also a bar with quick selection symbols on the main screen for direct access to important functions such as navigation, assistance systems or vehicle data. However, the tiles are relatively small.

Sales start in the fall

Space, an important argument for a Passat successor, is sufficient in the 4.97-metre-long VW ID.7 in all seats, even in the rear. The optional large glass roof provides a feel-good atmosphere and floods the interior with natural light or darkens it as desired. All in all, we think the VW ID.7 probably offers a lot for less than 60,000 francs and doesn’t need to hide from competition from Asia.
