The offer in the streaming jungle is becoming increasingly opaque. Even though there is protest when market leader Netflix raises subscription prices (again), the cheapest subscription has remained the same over the years. However, you will get the best price-performance ratio from another provider.

These are the largest streaming services

Netflix is the clear market leader in Switzerland with a market share of 39 percent. In second place is Amazon’s streaming service, followed by Disney Plus.

How many people use which service?

The electronic media interest group (IGEM) annually determines which streaming services are the most popular in Switzerland through a survey of the use of electronic media. Netflix was clearly ahead in 2022: almost half of all respondents watch Netflix at least occasionally. The American group has 3.1 million users in Switzerland.

Apple TV+ is the only provider whose usage has dropped over the past year, albeit by just 0.2 percent from 2021.

Most adults using streaming services are between the ages of 18 and 34. Amazon is remarkably little widespread.

Have prices increased?

Only two streaming services have increased their subscription prices in the past five years: Disney Plus and Apple TV+. Since Netflix is the only streaming service with different subscription prices, the cheapest subscription has been taken into account here.

The price for a basic Netflix subscription has remained constant over the past five years, but there have been significant price increases for the standard and premium subscriptions. The most expensive subscription to Netflix currently costs 24.90 francs, in 2018 it cost 19.90 francs. That is a price increase of 25 percent.

The providers have so many movies and series

Netflix, in particular, comes up with one new original production after another. But do they also have the most choice? Hardly. Amazon Prime Video leads the list with 6389 titles, but Netflix offers only eight titles less (as of April 14, 2023). What is also clear: apart from Apple TV+, all streaming services offer significantly more films than series.

Where do you get the most bang for your buck?

Which streaming service offers the best value for money? This is where Amazon Prime Video clearly comes into its own: Swiss pay CHF 9.90 per month and receive a selection of 6389 films and series. Users only pay CHF 0.0016 per title.

Even though the streaming subscription of Apple TV + is the cheapest at eight francs per month, Apple has the least offer with a total of 167 titles. As a result, Swiss users pay just over four cents per title.
