BMW’s new 5 Series debuts in early summer. Currently camouflaged prototypes are still making the rounds.

In the early summer, BMW pulls the cloth on its new 5 series. Currently camouflaged prototypes are still making the rounds. The first details of the 5 Series, which will start as sedans and station wagons, have already been announced.

It stays true to the BMW line and offers its customers the choice of driving. Four plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) from 200 to 700 hp with four, six or eight cylinders are planned for petrol and diesel engines. Maximum electric ranges must be over 100 kilometers. One of the PHEVs will be the top version of the M5, which will come in the future as a sedan or a station wagon and with 650 or 750 hp. Both PHEVs are contributed by BMW’s new mega SUV XM. However, it probably won’t be until the end of 2024, when other versions are already available.

850 horsepower electric

Dimensions remain almost unchanged. In terms of weight, too, there is almost no difference from the current generation, despite the additional equipment. Curved dual screens for instrumentation and infotainment in the cockpit are now also available in the 5 Series – an enlarged monitor for the front passenger can also be ordered. The long version for China remains, but other than that, BMW shines throughout the program: The four-door hatchback version, currently available as the 6 GT, should be phased out unchanged at the end of 2024. And manual transmissions are also outdated.

Similar to the new 7 Series, there’s also a new all-electric i5 variant, including a sports version called the i5 M. With a 4×4 it should have 600 to 850 hp. The other Stromer should be driven by one or two motors on the rear axle, depending on its power. A range of up to 600 kilometers should be possible. Because the battery pack already includes new modules, where the next 3-series will supposedly launch as a new class, and then in 2025, purely electrical only.

The first new 5 Series will be available to dealers in the fall. Two questions remain: prices – and whether the high-end model wants to be optically polarized, like the new 7 Series with a massive grille and slit headlights.
