Boom, boom, boom – loud noises are heard at Amag’s Mobility Hub in the Circle at Zurich Airport. A projector throws sharp colors against the wall. Only the introduction of the official welcome makes it clear: This is a young and dynamic automobile brand.
Born from VW’s subsidiary Seat, the Cupra sports brand has only been around for five years. However, he experienced a remarkable development in this short time. “We grew 93 percent worldwide in the last year alone and are the fastest growing brand in Europe,” says Swiss Cupra boss Cédric Keller proudly.
“We are a challenger brand for young people who want to drive a car that their parents and grandparents didn’t drive. And those who don’t see the car as just a pure means of transportation,” he continues. The message seems to have arrived. About 48 percent of all Cupra customers in Switzerland are under the age of 40 and 19 percent are under the age of 30. Cupra sold 4589 vehicles in Switzerland last year. 35 percent more this year, so it should be 6200. “And we are confident that we will achieve that goal,” said Cédric Keller.
Cupra’s ability to introduce the Urban Rebel, its second pure electric car after Cupra Born, proves how big the Volkswagen Group’s young brand was even before VW showed off the ID.2. same platform. And like the VW ID.2, the Cupra city broadcaster Urban Rebel looks sexy.
Spaniard Alberto Torrecillas is jointly responsible for the Rebel design. He accompanies his million-dollar prototype to Zurich and provides insight into its design philosophy. Torrecillas draws the most important lines of Urban Rebel with just a few taps on his tablet, whose image is projected onto the wall via a projector. “It is a pre-characteristic. The inspiration was the full face helmet,” he explains. This is evident in the windshield and side windows, which flow seamlessly into each other, similar to a helmet visor.
“We’re creating style for the next generation, Generation Z,” continues Amanda Gomez. In other words, the generation born between 1995 and 2010, who grew up with smart phones. Gemoz came all the way from Barcelona and is the project manager for color and materials at Cupra. Many of the color screens in the fully digitized cockpit resemble apps on our mobile phones and can be operated in the same way. There are also 3D-printed parts for the interior and eco-friendly, partially bio-based materials.
Series production of the Urban Rebel will begin two years later in Martorell, near Barcelona. From the outside, it should probably look as cool as the prototype currently shown at Zurich Airport. However, how many of Amanda Gomez’s inside ideas will go into mass production has yet to be decided. Swiss Cupra executives are targeting just under CHF 30,000 for market launch in 2025. If this is successful, Urban Rebel will win the hearts of many Generation Z.
