US prosecutors are stepping up pressure on the founder of the bankrupt cryptocurrency exchange FTX, Sam Bankman-Fried. They added a 13th allegation to their allegations against the former star entrepreneur, according to court documents released Tuesday.
Prosecutors also now accuse Bankman-Fried of attempting to bribe Chinese officials with $40 million in digital money in 2021 to undo the frozen accounts. Bankman-Fried’s lawyers initially declined to comment on the new allegations. The entrepreneur pleaded ‘not guilty’ against eight of the previous twelve and has not yet commented on the remaining four.
Bankman-Fried was arrested in the Bahamas on December 12 by order of the US Department of Justice. FTX had its headquarters there. Before the collapse, FTX was one of the largest trading centers for so-called cryptocurrencies such as the digital money Bitcoin. (sda/awp/dpa)
