Total has sold all its petrol stations in Germany due to the end of internal combustion engines

The French energy group TotalEnergies sells its networks of 1,198 filling stations in Germany and 392 in the Netherlands to the Canadian Couche-Tard. In Belgium and Luxembourg, a joint venture is being set up with Couche-Tard to operate the 619 Total filling stations there, the group announced in Paris on Thursday. The four fuel station networks will remain under the TotalEnergies brand for at least five years as long as they are fueled by Total.

The withdrawal from the service station business is related to the EU’s goal of climate neutrality and the planned end of new combustion car sales from 2035. This is prompting TotalEnergies to make decisions about its service station network in Europe, which has suffered revenue losses due to declining fuel sales . One of the reasons for this is that electric cars are more often charged at home or at the company, not at the charging stations of the filling stations, the group explains.

Against this background, petrol stations must in the future be transformed into service and lounge areas with shops, restaurants and services and not just fuel outlets. So TotalEnergies turned to Couche-Tard, known for its extensive experience operating convenience stores next to gas stations.
