Google employees protest layoffs in Zurich

On Wednesday, Google employees protested in Zurich against the global layoffs of the internet company: According to trade union Syndicom, about 400 to 500 people took part in a so-called “walkout” at 11 a.m.

In January, Google announced plans to cut jobs worldwide. This step has now become concrete for the Zurich location: “The employees whose roles have been affected have been informed”, Google confirms on request to a report from SRF on Wednesday.

The company declined to comment on the exact number of reports in Zurich. However, the number of affected jobs would be below the global average. Syndicom speaks of about five percent of those affected, which would correspond to 250 people with 5,000 employees.

With Wednesday’s ‘strike’, the participating Google employees showed solidarity with the dismissed workers, the union writes in a statement on Wednesday. Together with the employee representatives, she is now in talks with Google “to negotiate a comprehensive social plan”. It is also important to reduce the number of those affected. (aeg/sda)
