US regulators are investigating Tesla Model Y over falling steering wheels

US electric car maker Tesla has been targeted by US traffic control authority NHTSA after complaints about missing steering wheel mounts.

The US agency announced on Wednesday that it has launched a preliminary investigation into two reports of steering wheels falling off while driving.

Missing screws

According to NHTSA, the two affected vehicles were delivered without the necessary mounting screw to secure the steering wheel. The determination therefore includes a good 120,000 Tesla Model Y from the year 2023.

Air traffic control could order a safety recall as the next step. The authority is still in contact with Tesla to determine the extent of the problem.

In 2022, Tesla was hit with many NHTSA recalls, the tech blog Electrek recalls, but most of them were fixed with “over-the-air” updates. This has led Tesla fans to complain about the use of the word “recall”.

A statement from Tesla was not initially available. Shares of Tesla fell 3 percent in early US trading.
