In our village the speed limit is already 30 km/h and I ask myself: Will cyclists who are too fast flash and be fined? This will be possible at least for “fast” e-bikes with a moped number.

First of all: If you crash your bike at an inappropriate speed, you can be reported and fined. This can be expensive. Therefore: Please try to comply with the applicable speed limits, even if you are cycling!

But now back to your question: if the bikes are moving faster than the allowed and signposted speed, they are actually detected and flashed by the radar box. However, cyclists are not penalized. But it’s not just that regular bikes and “slow” e-bikes don’t have license plates. Even “faster” e-bike riders who must have a clearly visible registered plate are not fined if they travel too fast.

New regulation from April 2024

This is because bikes do not need a speedometer and therefore the rider cannot be asked to know how fast he is going on his bike. At least as long as nothing happens.

However: This will change on April 1, 2024. Because from this point on, a speedometer will apply to all newly sold fast e-bikes with a top speed of up to 45 km/h. Vehicles already released have a transition period of three years and must be equipped with a speedometer by April 1, 2027. Then very fast e-cyclists can certainly be fined.
