This motorcycle boy is crazy about e-bikes today

Sometimes Thomas Bieri drives an unpainted e-bike. The e-Framer is proud of its models but still does not use their letters. “Then I will test a prototype on my home route in Rabenfluh,” he says. On the trail outside Thun, he knows every bend and every obstacle, no matter how small. So he can see exactly whether a new suspension fork works on the bike or how it should be driven with different tires.

Bieri, 45, was still a mechanic at the age of 13—except that he didn’t do anything that is no longer illegal today. Even then, she sat on mopeds that were only allowed at the age of 14. And not only that: It also powered gasoline internal combustion engines.

To this day, Bieri loves to go to the workshop and deal with two-wheeled vehicles. “I don’t have much time for that anymore,” he says. Because at e-FRAMER the trained bicycle and motorcycle mechanic is now a product developer and operations manager.

Bieri has been one of the guys at Thun start-up from the very beginning. “After visiting a bicycle fair in Germany at the end of 2018, the three of us decided to try e-bikes.” At the time he and two colleagues were working at Stähli AG, which traded bicycle accessories. They ordered chassis and engines and assembled the first e-bikes in the company’s dark basement. To start production, they worked hard for four months on their project: extra hours in their spare time in addition to their 100 percent performance on their main job. After that it was clear: their business model with their e-bike works. And they hired permanent employees. They sold over 400 bikes the first year.

Meanwhile, e-FRAMER is an independent company with more than 20 employees. E-mountain bikes, e-SUV bikes for town and country and e-urban bikes are hand-assembled from A to Z by trained professionals in factory buildings in Thun, with parts tested and selected by Bieri. The unique thing about the e-FRAMER: The bikes are delivered to your home and delivered in person. And it is perfectly adapted to its owners.

As a product developer, Bieri can continue to fix it. There are new bike ideas for the e-FRAMER. And there are already some well-developed prototypes in the factory. He is not allowed to say what sets them apart. It’s a trade secret.
