Salt wants to provide as complete a coverage as possible throughout Switzerland. For this, the telecom company is working with Elon Musk’s aerospace company SpaceX.
SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet network will be combined with its own mobile network, Salt announced on Wednesday. From 2024, Salt customers could send text messages via the Starlink satellites. In 2025, the service will be expanded to voice and data services.
Salt emphasized that the partnership with SpaceX makes it possible to push the boundaries of conventional mobile networks to remote and underserved areas. The problem of sufficient supply in topographically difficult terrain has thus been solved.
According to the press release, this is the first agreement of this kind in Europe.
The service will be free for customers with “Salt Premium” rates (private or business customers). For other pricing plans, the service is “affordable” and available as an add-on option, Salt said.
