Netflix details its measures against shared accounts and

Netflix has begun to detail new measures that will seek to end the practice of sharing bills between multiple households, a plan it has been preparing for months to increase the number of its subscribers.

The streaming platform has already tested some of these innovations in several Latin American countries, which it now plans to expand to the rest of the world, initially starting in March.

It’s in an update to their website in those countries –Costa Rica, Chile and Peru– where the US company reveals how it will ensure that passwords are not shared between several homes.

Netflix will force users to set a “primary location” and force every device that wants to use the account to connect to that same Wi-Fi network at least once every 31 days.

“People who are not part of your household will need to use their own account to watch Netflix. Netflix may not be viewable on devices that are not part of your primary location,” the company explains.

For those who want to share their account with someone who lives outside their home, Netflix In recent months, it has been testing in those three countries the possibility of adding additional members in exchange for an additional payment, an amount which in each case is less than that of the basic plan.

Netflix warns that the device may be locked when someone logs in to it outside of the primary location or if the account is repeatedly accessed from another location and offers the possibility to request a temporary code to access the service for 7 days, for example if you travel.

“Widespread use of joint accounts (more than 100 million households) undermines our ability to invest and improve over the long term Netflixas well as for building our business,” the company explained in a letter to its shareholders last month.

In the terms of use of the platform, it was already stated earlier that accounts Netflix They are intended for people who live in the same household, but the company has been lenient with the practice of sharing passwords for years.

To combat it, the company has also begun force-checking the devices you log in from, and uses information like IP addresses, device identifiers and account activity to figure out which devices aren’t part of the household.

Except, Netflix announced in a statement Wednesday improvements to its Premium plan, which include access to “surround sound” to enjoy surround sound on all devices and without the need for separate devices.

In addition, it will allow downloading content for offline viewing on more devices, up to four to six for premium subscribers.
