Hacker attack on southern German university – 8000 students hit

The University of Heilbronn in Baden-Württemberg has limited access after a hacker attack. Education should continue more or less normally.

Due to a hacker attack, the Heilbronn University of Applied Sciences is only accessible to a limited extent. The university announced on its website that the study would continue on site. The Südwestrundfunk (SWR) had previously reported about it.

There are “first indications of a criminal cyberattack,” according to a statement from the university. Investigations with the Baden-Württemberg Cyber Security Agency and the State Criminal Investigation Department are ongoing.

“HHN has become the target of a hacker attack. The university’s data center noticed unusual activity in the network. A first precaution was to take the university offline.”

Heilbronn: Access and emails compromised

This concerns e-mail traffic, VPN access for students and employees and the e-learning platform Ilias. According to the announcement, students who fail to meet deadlines due to the technical failure should not expect negative effects on their academic performance.

“Study terms (e.g. basic math test) can be extended in exceptional cases, e.g. if it can be demonstrated that the required materials cannot be used.”

About 8,200 people study at the university at three different locations in Heilbronn, Künzelsau and Schwäbisch Hall. It is one of the largest colleges in the Southwest. The focus is on technology, business and IT.
