Musk takes over Twitter and kicks out top executives – “the bird is free”

According to various US media reports, high-tech billionaire Elon Musk completed the acquisition of short-messaging service Twitter on Thursday (local time) and fired company executives.

Musk immediately fired Twitter boss Parag Agrawal and two other senior executives, the Washington Post and CNBC reported, citing unnamed sources. The company did not immediately respond to a request from the AFP news agency.

Shortly afterwards, Musk tweeted four words: “the bird is free” – a nod to Twitter’s blue bird.

A deadline set by a judge for an agreement between Musk and Twitter for a takeover is said to have expired on Friday. Musk announced in April that he plans to buy Twitter for $44 billion. In July, however, the 51-year-old withdrew. The entrepreneur stated that Twitter had provided false information about the number of spam and fake accounts on the network.

The company rejected the allegations and went to court to force the multi-billionaire to complete the acquisition. Musk then announced in early October that he wanted to buy Twitter as originally planned. The judge in charge then postponed the trial scheduled for mid-October and asked the parties to the dispute to reach an agreement by Friday. (sda/afp)
