I’m going to South Tyrol for a few days for Easter and I want to take my dog ​​with me. Do I need to pay particular attention to anything?

I am a dog owner myself and I know that a long journey is often stressful for the animal. Therefore, you should plan well in advance so that everyone involved can reach the resorts in South Tyrol without any problems or stress.

Transporting dogs in cars is subject to road traffic legislation. Accordingly, dogs are considered cargo. The dog must not endanger or distract anyone during transport so that the driver can concentrate on traffic at all times.

Animal protection law primarily addresses the transportation of farm animals. However, the same rules apply to pets. Whether it’s by car, train or ship, dogs need to be transported in a way that doesn’t cause them pain or risk injury.

Get used to the car as a puppy

Preparation is everything. Therefore, the dog should be accustomed to driving in the car when it is a puppy. The best way to learn to use a carrier box that will later be used in the car – which I recommend in any case – is to be stress-free.

This also applies: Do not travel during the hottest hours of the day and avoid traffic congestion if possible. Turn off speakers in your dog’s living space and protect him from direct sunlight and drafts. Stopping every two to three hours is beneficial not only for the dog but also for the driver and other passengers. This means your four-legged friend can drink enough water and move around. Whenever possible, park in the shade so that the car does not overheat unnecessarily. And very important: For safety reasons and especially due to the risk of overheating, never leave your dog alone in the car!

In Italy, collars and muzzles are used in public transport

When traveling abroad, it is also important to learn in advance the laws that apply in the country you are traveling to. Good to know: In Italy, for example, walking on a leash is mandatory, as well as wearing a muzzle on public transport. The risk of contracting infectious diseases also increases in the Mediterranean region or Eastern Europe. Before you travel, it’s best to ask your veterinarian about disease risks and possible prophylaxis at the resort. Rabies prophylaxis is absolutely necessary when entering the EU.
