The European Parliament has expressed its opinion on the first law on artificial intelligence

At the plenary session of the European Parliament this Wednesday, the first law on artificial intelligence of the European Union (EU) and the world will be voted on, which the community institutions had already agreed on last December.

If the members of the European Parliament support the political agreement, the law will take another step towards final approval in the coming weeks. although it won’t be until 2026 when it comes into force.

Regulations allow or prohibit the use of artificial intelligence depending on the risk it poses to citizens, and with this the EU wants to set an example to the rest of the world and encourage European industry against the United States and China.

ANDBroadly speaking, the AI law prohibits mass surveillance in public spaces, but allows law enforcement to use biometric identification cameraswith prior court approval, in order to prevent an imminent terrorist threat.

Also for locating or identifying a person who has committed crimes of terrorism, human trafficking, sexual exploitation or, for example, a crime against the environment, as well as for searching for victims of these crimes.

Except, The regulation establishes a series of obligations for the generative artificial intelligence systems on which programs such as ChatGPT are based, from the company OpenAI, or Bard, from Google.

Specifically, they will have to state whether the text, song or photo was generated using artificial intelligence and guarantee that the data used to train the system respects copyright.

Except, A whole range of high-risk artificial intelligence systems have been identified that can only be placed on the market if their developers guarantee that they respect fundamental rights.

For example, those that may influence the outcome of an election or those used by financial institutions to assess the solvency and credit rating of clients.
