By renaming its AI system, Google wants to sharpen its profile. At the same time, the internet company announces AI apps for smartphones and a paid professional version.
In the future, Google will combine its apps and services with artificial intelligence under the Gemini brand. To date, only one major language model (LLM) has been named Gemini.
Google’s chatbot was previously called Bard, named after the English poet William Shakespeare (nickname: “The Bard of Avon”). This name for OpenAI’s ChatGPT challenger will disappear in the future, company boss Sundar Pichai announced on Thursday.
In the US, Gemini will now also be available on smartphones. Mobile phones with the Google Android operating system will have their own Gemini app. On Apple’s iPhone, Gemini is offered within the existing Google app. The AI system will also replace the previous voice assistant ‘Google Assistant’ if users agree to the switch.
Google did not announce when the apps would be available in Europe. A week after the US launch, the apps will be rolled out in even more English-speaking countries, as well as in Japanese and Korean in Japan and South Korea. Experience shows that other languages such as Spanish and German follow with an interval of a few months.
Google is also releasing one at the same time as the smartphone apps Paid AI professional version – Gemini Advanced – on the market, which is based on the new language model Ultra 1.0. It will initially be offered in 150 countries in the English-speaking world and is part of the Google One subscription service.
The AI service costs just under ten dollars per month, but is only available in the most expensive version of Google One, which costs ten dollars extra. In return, customers receive two terabytes of cloud storage space. It has not been announced when the service can be booked in Europe.
Google CEO Sissie Hsiao said in a blog post that Gemini Advanced is much more capable of highly complex tasks such as writing code, reasoning, following advanced instructions and collaborating on creative projects.
