Bluesky is accessible to everyone as an alternative to the short messaging service X

Anyone interested can now register with the short message service Bluesky, an alternative to Elon Musk’s Twitter successor

Even with access via invite codes, Bluesky had three million registrations in its first year and most recently 1.6 million monthly active users, as company boss Jay Graber told technology blog “The Verge” on Tuesday.

The service is designed as a decentralized alternative to X – a platform on which many interconnected online networks can exist. The project was started in 2019 by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, when he was still head of the short messaging service.

After Musk took over Twitter, interest in alternatives increased. The tech billionaire supports the positions of the American right and also caused a shift to the right on the platform, which has now been renamed X.

The strongest competition yet has been Facebook group Meta’s rival service Threads, which recently had 130 million monthly active users. (saw/sda/dpa)
