Researchers in the German state of Saxony have seized Bitcoins worth around two billion euros. The MDR reports this. The Dresden Public Prosecutor’s Office, the Saxony Criminal Investigation Department and the Leipzig tax authorities achieved success in mid-January.
A 40-year-old German and a 37-year-old Pole are accused of commercial infringement of copyright law and subsequently of money laundering. The two men are said to have operated the illegal streaming portal movie2k.to until the end of 2013 and thus collected the cryptocurrency.
They were already accused in 2020 of distributing more than 880,000 digital copies of films via the portal from autumn 2008 to May 2013 and thus of operating an illegal streaming service. The money was generated from advertising and subscription revenue.

It is still unclear what will happen to the cryptocurrency. The State Criminal Investigation Department and the Saxony Public Prosecutor’s Office said in response to a request from t-online that a decision would only be made after the procedure. In total, almost 50,000 Bitcoins were seized. One Bitcoin is currently equivalent to about 40,000 euros. (t-online, ams)
