Sales of Amag, Switzerland’s largest automobile importer, increased from CHF 4.4 billion in 2022 to CHF 5.2 billion last year. According to CEO Helmut Ruhl (55), the drivers of the positive development were battery electric vehicles: Amag and its brands Audi, Cupra, Seat, Skoda and VW sold more electric vehicles than ever before, with 18,542 units, a sales increase of 35.2 percent reached the figure. The market share of fully electric vehicles is 100 percent.

At the same time, photovoltaic supplier Helion, which was acquired in 2022, also contributed to the increase in sales. Last year it expanded its solar power capacity to charge 32,900 electric vehicles. With Helion and its car subscription subsidiary Clyde, Amag wants to offer a complete ecosystem for electromobility: in addition to electric cars, electricity generation, electricity purchasing, charging technology and on-the-go charging come from a single source.

More than selling cars

Despite new technologies such as synthetic e-fuels or plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) accounting for about nine percent of the new car market, Ruhl sees the future in fully battery electric vehicles. But Ruhl says it is now important to “bring together mobility and energy and offer solutions.”

Ruhl expects intense competition in 2024, after the supply congestion caused by production cuts due to Corona and the Ukraine war caused new car prices to increase in recent years. VW will respond with special models offering savings of up to 8,750 francs, depending on the vehicle. For the overall car market, it, like the Swiss Automobile Industry Association, expects 260,000 new purchases for 2024, after 252,214 units in 2023.
