The first VW Golf was launched 50 years ago. It has now sold approximately 37 million units worldwide so successfully that it has transformed the compact car segment into the Golf class.
But with the launch of the new VW ID electric family, the best-selling Golf’s days are numbered. While the ID.3, often lauded as the successor to the electric Golf, isn’t a blockbuster new model, this facelift of the Golf 8 will likely be its last before it is sent into a well-deserved retirement. possibly various special and final editions.
“You can’t play golf any more,” said VW boss Thomas Schäfer (53) at the presentation. However, this is reflected in the performance. The Golf GTI’s hood now packs 265 hp (195 kW); That’s at least 15 hp (11 kW) more than before. The more powerful version of the 1.5 TSI also gets a power increase of 14 hp (10 kW) with 204 hp (150 kW). There will initially be a revised Golf 8 with nine engine options and an output range of 115 to 265 hp (85 to 195 kW). However, a more powerful Golf R will probably come. But that means “more golf” is still possible.
Although the Golf 8 is still available as a station wagon version, two plug-in hybrids are available for the hatchback version only: either as an eHybrid with 204 hp (150 kW) or as a GTE with 272 hp (200 kW), six each It is combined with a dual-clutch transmission. A lot has happened technically with the two drive modules, which will also be used in other VW Group brands. The battery now has a net capacity of 19.7 kWh (previously 10.6 kWh); This is good for an all-electric range of around 100 kilometers, as we already know from the new Passat.
More importantly, VW has finally managed to increase charging speed. While previously the electricity at the AC charging station was transferred to the energy storage at 3.6 kW, it is now 11 kW and at the DC fast charging station it has reached a maximum of 50 kW. For a part-time electric vehicle to travel efficiently, the combustion engine must also be economical. That’s why the 1.5 TSI petrol engine has a turbocharger with variable turbine geometry. Overall, the new plug-in Golf will be able to travel up to 1,000 kilometers without stopping for refueling or charging.
VW is using the model upgrade of the eighth-generation Golf to improve the infotainment system as well. In the future, the newly developed system will be based on the fourth generation of the modular infotainment system (MIB4) already used in other models of the Group. In addition to the software, which we hope will work smoothly from the start this time, the operation will also be more intuitive than before. Like other brands, VW relies on apps and tiles, which include a bar with fixed (but freely programmable) buttons, as we know from smartphones.
The touchscreen is available in two sizes: 10.4 and 12.9 inches. The VW Golf can now be parked and unparked automatically using your mobile phone. When visibility is poor, the advanced LED light that shines up to 500 meters helps. However, there is no visually striking innovation. Maybe the headlights that flash a little more aggressively into the world now, the glowing VW logo on the performance headlights, or the 3D taillights? The first revised VW Golf 8 is expected to be available to Swiss dealers in July, but prices are not yet known.
