The most common cause of car breakdown in Switzerland is a flat or faulty car battery.
Andreas FaustHead of Vehicles and Mobility

Experts at TCS state every year: The most common cause of a car breakdown in Switzerland is a dead battery. Without voltage, the starter does not have the power to start the engine. Then you must either leave the car behind and buy a new battery, or ask someone to fill the gap. The good starter battery of another car revives the dead battery. All you need is an ISO 6722 jumper cable, which you should always have in your car. Important: All live parts of the terminals, except the ends, must be covered with plastic for your safety.

The only thing that matters when starting your car is to do it right. Following these instructions, battery resuscitation will be successful:

one

Secure the car

If the car breaks down on a public road and no longer moves, the location and the donor vehicle need to be secured. So create a breakdown triangle and wear a high-vis vest so you can best be seen.

red cable

The terminals of car batteries are marked with + and – symbols. If not: Check the operating instructions to see which pole is the positive pole. If the polarities are changed, there is a risk of damaging the electronic parts of your vehicle. So check first and then connect the red wire of the jumper cable to the positive terminal of the faulty car. The other end goes to the positive pole of the donor vehicle.

3

black cable

Now connect the black wire to the negative battery terminal of the donor car or the specified ground point. The other end goes to the ground point in the engine compartment of the faulty car. Ground points are sheet metal parts, for example in the bulkhead (separating the engine from the interior) or in the screw heads. Important: They must be unpainted to ensure smooth current flow. Caution: Never connect the black cable to the battery when your vehicle breaks down; this may cause sparks to fly.

4

Beginning

Now start the donor vehicle’s engine. Do not use the gas while the vehicle is stationary, this may result in a penalty. Wait a few minutes, then start the breakdown car. If it works, good. If not, try up to two more times. You should then call a professional because there could be a serious electrical fault. If the faulty vehicle is running, you should leave both vehicles idling for a while to recharge the electricity used or charge the faulty vehicle’s battery.

separate cars

Again, the order is important: first disconnect the black wire from the donor car, then from the faulty car. The red wire can then be easily removed.

6

Ride, ride, ride

Anyone who parks the now revived, faulty vehicle may be making a mistake; because the current in the battery may not be enough to restart it. Therefore, once you bridge the failed vehicle, drive it for 30 to 60 minutes so that the battery has enough time to regenerate. Otherwise, you will be left without power the next time you try to start it. Important: Now pay attention to error messages. Sometimes it is not the age of the battery, but an electrical fault that is responsible for the empty power tank.

7

New battery?

No battery lasts forever: If a revived battery is already four to six years old, you should replace it at the next opportunity.

8.

What about electric cars?

In addition to the high-voltage battery, electric vehicles also have a 12-volt starter battery. It is also used to power the electronics when starting the vehicle. If it is empty, it can be revived using the same procedure. But: Since the batteries in the Stromer do not need to move the starter, but only power the electronics, they are generally much smaller in size. Therefore, never use an electric car as a donor when bridging. Hybrids can in principle be bridged from starter battery to starter battery. For all electric drives, you must first read the operating instructions to avoid damage to sensitive electronics.
