Switzerland is the land of SUVs! Nearly one in every two cars sold in 2023 was a sport utility vehicle; This rate was not this high in any other country in Europe. With so many SUV innovations already in the starting blocks, it’s unlikely to be any less. Last December, Alfa announced that it would put the Milano mini crossover on the roads in the summer. The Italians’ first pure electric car is based on the technology of the company’s siblings, the Jeep Avenger and Fiat 600e, but in the announced all-wheel drive performance version it is likely to be significantly more powerful than the previous 156 hp. A 136 hp mild hybrid version is also planned. Prices for the Milano, which has not yet been announced, are likely to start at 35,000 (hybrid) or 45,000 francs.
Starting from March, a new breath will begin to breathe into BMW’s X2 crossover. Not only has the new generation grown by almost 20 centimeters to reach a length of 4.55 metres, but it now looks much more like its bigger siblings, the X4 and X6. In addition to two mild hybrid gasoline engines and a diesel engine, the SUV is also available as a fully electric top model, the iX2, which produces 313 hp and 4×4 power. Prices start from 52,100 francs. BMW will also relaunch the mid-size SUV X3 in 2024.
With more than 1.5 million electric cars produced, Chinese industrial giant BYD (Build Your Dreams) was right behind Tesla with 1.8 million electric vehicles produced in 2023. After the Atto 3, Dolphin and Seal models, the Chinese are now bringing Seal U to Europe. The SUV, which is 4.79 meters long, has a 218 hp front engine and a range of up to 500 kilometers, will be available in some markets in the first quarter – it is still unclear when the Seal U will arrive in Switzerland, with prices starting from around 50,000 francs.
Along with Chery, another Chinese manufacturer wants to establish itself in our country with its Omoda, Jaecoo and Exlantix brands. Omoda 5 will be released this spring; The 4.40-meter-long crossover will initially be offered with a 200 hp gasoline engine, and later with fully electric drive and a range of 440 kilometers. The price of Omoda 5 will be between 30,000 francs (gasoline) and 40,000 francs (electricity).
However, cheap SUVs are also flocking to dealers in Europe this year. This spring, Citroën is launching the ë-C3, the modern equivalent of the iconic Döschwo. The short 4.02-metre SUV has a range of up to 320 kilometers and is expected to start at less than 25,000 francs. The new Fiat Panda, which will be launched at the end of the year, is based on the same technology as the ë-C3. The Concept Centoventi study already gives the first information about what the electric panda, which costs around 25,000 francs, could look like. At the beginning of the year, Fiat launched the 600e city SUV, whose price starts at 38,190 francs.
Seat sports subsidiary Cupra was supposed to deliver the dynamically designed SUV coupé Tavascan to dealers by the end of 2023 – the new launch date is summer 2024. At what prices will the Spanish launch the Tavascan, which has up to 340 hp? The power range up to 550 kilometers has not yet been seen but has not been corrected yet. Prices for the new version of Dacia Duster have not been determined yet. The best-selling SUV across Europe is likely to stay well below the 30,000 franc mark when it launches at the end of spring with a new mild hybrid drive (140 hp petrol and electric engine) and front- or all-wheel drive.
Ford will launch the almost 4.50-meter-long electric SUV Explorer at the end of summer, following its launch in spring 2023. Based on VW’s modular electrical system, the vehicle will initially be offered with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive in the power range between 170 and 300 hp. Prices will start at just under 50,000 francs. Towards the end of the year, Ford will also introduce the smaller and cheaper Puma Electric. Jeep will launch the 4×4 version of its successfully launched Avenger city SUV in the fall. The first all-electric Jeep will offer significantly more than the previous 156 hp, but will also be well above the previous starting price of just under 40,000 francs.
Compact work continues at Lexus, Toyota’s luxury subsidiary, which wants to make a literal breakthrough with the LBX (Lexus Breakthrough Crossover) that will be released at the beginning of this year. The short 4.19-meter SUV is the first model developed by the Japanese for and in Europe, and is intended to appeal especially to young people. Full hybrid propulsion (136 hp) comes from its tech sibling, the Toyota Yaris Cross. Prices start from 35,900 francs (front-wheel drive) or 44,900 francs (4×4).
BMW’s subsidiary Mini will really see a big boost in 2024: In addition to the new generation three-door Mini Cooper, which is now parked in dealerships as a fully electric vehicle, the all-new Mini Countryman will follow in the spring. Compared to its predecessor, the compact SUV gains a whopping 13 centimeters to 4.43 meters and is now also available with a fully electric drive system. You can choose between a 204-hp front-wheel-drive vehicle and a 313-hp all-wheel-drive vehicle that should cover between 433 and 462 kilometers. However, two petrol engines with 170 or 300 hp (John Cooper Works, 4×4) also remain on offer. The cheapest option starts from 46,500 francs. Later in the year, Mini will also launch a coupe version of the Countryman called the Aceman.
Many new SUV innovations will also debut at Opel in 2024. The new version of the compact Crossland will launch in the summer and, like all new Opel models, will probably be fully electric with the famous Stellantis technology (156 hp, 50 kWh battery). Crossland will also continue to be offered with gasoline or diesel engine options between 110 and 130 hp. Prices should start from around 30,000 francs. In addition to the Crossland, Opel will also launch the successor to the larger Grandland in the autumn. According to preliminary information, the mid-range SUV looks set to use technology from the recently reintroduced Peugeot 3008: In addition to hybrid internal combustion engines and plug-in hybrid, a fully electric, 4×4 Grandland with up to 320 hp is also available. and a range of up to 700 kilometers is possible. The price of the entry-level electric version with 210 hp and a maximum range of 525 kilometers will start at just under 50,000 francs, like the Peugeot e-3008.
Not only is Skoda relaunching its large Kodiaq family SUV in the spring, it’s also launching a new electric model, the Elroq, under the previously available Enyaq in the autumn. The Elroq is intended to be the electric equivalent of the 4.38 meter long Karoq and could be offered in an entry-level version with 150 hp rear-wheel drive and a small 48 kWh battery to keep the price attractive. There are rumors around 35,000 francs. A model with 204 hp and a large 77 kWh battery, like the VW ID.3 and ID.4 technology siblings, also looks realistic.
The Smart brand, which was revived by Mercedes and China’s automobile giant Geely after its still fresh No. 1, is adding its next electric car at the beginning of the year. The 4.40 meter long #3, which is the coupé version of the 13 centimeters shorter #1, promises a lot of performance for a low price: the basic version with rear-wheel drive and 272 hp starts at 34,980 francs, while the 428 hp Brabus with 4×4 It starts from 34,980 francs. 47,480 Franconia. The 62 kWh battery is expected to last more than 400 kilometers. Things are more traditional at Subaru, where the Crosstrek hit dealers at the beginning of the year as the successor to the XV. The robust crossover with the 136 hp e-Boxer hybrid engine starts at 37,400 francs.
4×4 specialist Suzuki will not have an electric car in dealerships this year either. But the Japanese will at least officially unveil the EVX, which has only been shown as a study so far, in November. The 4.30 meter long compact SUV is located between the Vitara and SX4 S-Cross models and is said to have a range of up to 500 kilometers with its 60 kWh battery. It’s still unclear how much the first electric Suzuki will cost. What is certain is that it will be 4×4.
The information about the Renault Scenic E-Tech Electric that we drove before is much more specific. The 4.47 meter long crossover is the big brother of the electric Megane and also provides a range of up to 620 kilometers with its 218 hp front engine and 87 kWh battery. Later, a 170 hp version with a smaller battery and a range of 425 kilometers will arrive. Market launch starts in spring from 43,700 francs.
Toyota is marking the beginning of the end of so much SUV innovation with a new version of its coupé-like C-HR. Continuing to be boldly designed, the crossover comes in three hybrid variants with power from 140 to 196 hp and front- or all-wheel drive, as well as a completely revamped 223-hp plug-in hybrid already installed in the new Prius. The vehicle, which has an electric range of 66 kilometers, needs to consume only 0.8 liters of gasoline in the first 100 kilometers. It starts from 36,900 francs at the beginning of the year.
You can buy the new city SUV from Volvo for a full 100 francs less. The EX30 is based on the SEA electric platform developed by Chinese parent company Geely and therefore shares technology with the Smart #1. The EX30 is available with rear or all-wheel drive, system outputs from 272 to 428 hp and two battery sizes; This means the short 4.23 meter SUV can travel between 427 and 613 kilometres.
At the end of the new range is a true SUV bestseller: the third generation of the VW Tiguan remains visually true to itself and continues to offer an extremely wide range of drive systems. Two new plug-in hybrid module options are available with a system output of 204 or 272 hp, providing an electric range of up to 100 kilometers. There are also numerous hybrid, petrol and diesel versions with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive and outputs from 130 to 265 hp. The price of the mild hybrid basic variant starts from 37,700 francs.
