Apple’s “Vision Pro” is coming – and it’s going to be pretty complicated

According to media reports, the American company plans to launch its ‘revolutionary’ mixed reality glasses in February. Market observers are calling it the “most complex product launch” to date.

Apple is preparing to launch its Vision Pro mixed reality glasses in February 2024. This was reported by the well-known Apple insider Mark Gurman in an article on the news portal “Bloomberg”.

As Gurman writes, citing people familiar with the matter, Apple has increased production of the data glasses at its Chinese manufacturers, creating the conditions for an early market launch.

“The Vision Pro is Apple’s first new product category since it started selling smartwatches in 2015.”

What is mixed reality?

In mixed reality, digital objects are displayed in the real environment using data glasses, so that they blend into the environment and interact with each other.

For example: a virtually rendered dog looks out from behind a real tree. There is also virtual reality (the user only sees a virtual world in front of him, for example a virtual dog in a virtual world) and augmented reality: Here digital objects are also displayed in the real world; However, they do not interact with the environment here.

In addition, the company sent an email to software developers mid-week asking them to prepare for Vision Pro “by testing their apps with the latest tools.” This is also a sign of an impending release, Gurman says.

The introduction of data glasses is Apple’s “most complex product launch yet” and will require entirely new sales strategies, it goes on to say. Why? Because the data glasses contain components that must be customized to the customer’s needs, they say.

This included parts that ensure that the device can be properly attached to the user’s head. Otherwise, the content may not be displayed correctly.

Extensive training for Apple Store associates

The Vision Pro will be available in numerous sizes and configurations.

Moreover, training employees at Apple facilities is complex, Gurman writes. The company plans to send at least two employees from each of its offices to its headquarters in Cupertino, California, in January for further training. There, employees must learn how to use the headset correctly.

The iPhone company introduced the device last June, which is reminiscent of high-tech ski goggles. The headset can display digital objects in the real environment on the displays.

The first generation of the Vision Pro will cost $3,499. It is not known when the glasses will come to Europe. Market observers expect that sales in this country will not start until the end of 2024 at the earliest.

“The Vision Pro is just the first part of what Apple hopes will be an increasingly successful line of mixed reality products. The company is already working on a more comfortable and cost-effective model that could help the concept become a breakthrough.”
