However, on the roads leading to the mountains we can come across a blue sign with a white snow chain symbol; From here on, winter tires are not enough, snow chains are mandatory! If you don’t want installing chains on your vehicle to freeze your fingers, get your clothes dirty, or even end up in a relationship argument, it’s a good idea to follow the tips.

After purchasing, test and install the chains in the garage. Anyone who masters the test drive will be able to carry out the assembly later, even under more adverse conditions.

For night assembly, put chains in the car, as well as a rubber mat for kneeling on, good gloves and a flashlight. In many EU countries, it is mandatory to wear a fluorescent vest during installation; But even if it isn’t, it makes sense.

Don’t wait until you get stuck in the snow: If you react in time, you can more easily install the chains in a snow-cleared parking lot or even under a protective gas station roof.

The snow chain requirement also applies to four-wheel drive vehicles unless expressly exempt. 4×4 cars can also skid when going downhill. Important: The vehicle’s operating instructions inform you which wheel pair the chains belong to, as this depends on the design of the 4×4. It belongs to the front wheels in front-wheel drive vehicles, and to the rear wheels in rear-wheel drive vehicles.

Regardless of whether you have rear, front or four-wheel drive, it is generally recommended to install chains on all four wheels. The front wheels need grip for steering, and the rear wheels need grip for longitudinal stability.

After driving 50 to 100 meters, it should be briefly checked again to ensure that the chains are secure and that there is no damage to the vehicle.

The speed limit for snow chains is 50 km/h. In older vehicles, ABS and ESP also need to be turned off because these systems prevent the chains from actually getting stuck in the snow.

Avoid driving on dry roads if possible. Additionally, thorough cleaning after each use extends the life of each snow chain. And important to know: Snow chains do not replace winter tires.
