The table shows how much electricity consumers in the car cost on average.
Andreas EngelEditor Car and Mobility

Early in the morning, at seven o’clock, the thermometer reads below freezing. Anyone who gets into an ice-cold car now sets the heating to maximum and often turns on heated seats and steering wheel, as well as heated front and rear windows. If you like it so much, you can even turn on the car’s auxiliary heater remotely from the breakfast table and look forward to getting into the comfortable, warm vehicle.

Although practical, as the name suggests, these electric consumers consume electricity and therefore cause more fuel costs for combustion engines and electric car types. And money. German transport club ADAC researched how much amenities actually cost us. The results are impressive; see the table above.

Travel costs are rising rapidly

In its calculation, ADAC assumes that 100 watts of power results in the consumption of 0.1 liters of gasoline per hour or 0.1 kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity. The average price we chose for the cost breakdown is 1.80 francs per liter for gasoline and 25 cents per kilowatt hour for electricity.

We use the following calculation example: If the heated windshield (800 W), heated seats (100 W) and radio (20 W) are turned on and the smartphone is charged at the same time (10 W), the cost of driving with a gasoline engine is about 1.50 francs per hour, electric In the car, it increases by approximately 60 centimeters!

Our energy saving tips

Things get even more difficult when the auxiliary heater mentioned at the beginning is running constantly – keyword camping: This can result in additional costs of up to three francs per hour. However, it is usually the total number of consumers that increases fuel and electricity consumption; hence our tip for saving energy: Switch on electrical consumers only when necessary. You’ll save money if you turn off the rear window heating as soon as the window is clear and don’t use the heated seats for the entire trip.

However, when it comes to security, no savings should be made. Good lighting is essential, especially in the dark season, and the fan protects against fogging of the windows: it is good to save money, but it is better to arrive safely.
