Tchibo and Tesla already tried this with the Model 3, but they were not very successful. Now Hyundai and Amazon are making a new initiative. Starting in January, Hyundai wants to sell all its models, including its popular Ioniq 5 or 6 electric vehicles, through the largest online shopping platform, Amazon. It will initially be a pilot project with 18 dealers in the US, then the program will be expanded starting in July 2024.

In parallel, Hyundai is making Amazon Web Services (AWS) its preferred cloud provider. South Koreans want to advance their digital transformation and use Amazon technology to do so. A number of previously native applications in research, development and customer loyalty will be migrated to AWS. Amazon’s voice assistant Alexa will also be installed in newly developed Hyundai models starting from 2025.

A long term partnership

Both parties emphasize that this new sales partnership between Hyundai and Amazon is not limited to individual models and is intended to be long-term. Therefore they should not be underestimated. After all, Hyundai, along with its subsidiaries Kia and Genesis, is one of the largest automobile companies in the world and has recently increased its profits by 134 percent. Amazon is the world’s largest online commerce platform and has long been more than just an online bookstore, as it was when it was founded in 1994.

However, it is not yet known whether the example of the two giants will set a precedent. The classic car trade, which is already under pressure due to the agency model, is unlikely to be excited by the new sales competition. On the other hand, it will likely take some time for customers to bring their Hyundais to Amazon for repair or service.
