Following the introduction of the new Countryman at the IAA in Munich (D) in September, the sports version of the crossover is following suit. It once again bears the name John Cooper Works, in memory of racing car designer John Cooper (1923-2000), who assisted in tuning the classic Mini in the 1960s. Surprise: The regular Countryman will also be available as an electric car with up to 313 hp and all-wheel drive, while the John Cooper Works version will be fuel limited.
The two-litre turbo four-cylinder engine produces 300 hp (221 kW) and delivers a maximum torque of 400 Newton metres. This is enough for 0 to 100 km/h in 5.4 seconds and a top speed of 250 km/h. It comes standard with all-wheel drive and an automatic transmission.
There’s now more space inside, as in the regular Countryman, thanks to the significantly larger trunk, and there’s a minimalist-style cockpit where everything on the dashboard revolves around the central round instrument. Riding modes can be operated via toggles on the switch bar, with all other functions controlled via the round touchscreen. If you don’t want to look at the screen instead of the road, smart voice control will help you out with your hands on the easy-grip sports steering wheel.
The length of the rear seat can be moved up to 13 centimeters. Cargo space behind the electric tailgate is between 460 and 1,450 liters. It’s more a matter of taste: At the press of a button, the so-called sound extension allows the engine to be started with acoustic quotes taken from motorsport through the flap exhaust system. The new Mini John Cooper Works Countryman will be available to Swiss dealers in the first quarter of 2024 and its sales price will start from 59,600 Swiss Francs.
