VW shows its first electric station wagon

New name for a proven concept: VW has been building station wagons for 60 years, which were previously known as Variant or Shooting Brake (in the Arteon). With the new ID.7 Tourer, the space giants at VW are getting a new name.

The first electric station wagon from Wolfsburg is expected to be launched on the market in 2024. VW hasn’t revealed many details yet. But they should largely match those of the sedan.

The new ID.7 Tourer at a glance

Short overhangs with a length of about five meters and a wheelbase of three meters: this creates a lot of space in the interior for the passengers. However, compared to the length, the trunk volume of 545 liters is rather undersized. With the rear seats folded down, the tourer should fit 1714 liters.

The large wheelbase also makes room for a large battery. In addition to a 77 kWh battery (range: 600 kilometers), there is also a version with 85 kWh (700 kilometers). The maximum charging power is 200 kW.

Inside, a 15-inch center display and a head-up display with augmented reality technology (embeds computer-generated information and images in the real world) are standard. The basic equipment includes a reversing camera, a navigation system (“Discover Max Pro”) and 19-inch wheels. The rear engine power is initially 210 kW (286 hp). A version with four-wheel drive, two engines and more power is being considered.

Production at the VW factory in Emden

Like the ID.7, the ID.7 Tourer is also manufactured at the Emden factory in Lower Saxony. Production of the sedan (market launch in November) started in August. Your starting price is 57,000 euros, the top model with an 85 kWh battery should cost around 70,000 euros. A small additional charge is expected for the combination variant. Because of the high price, VW is likely to attract mainly commercial buyers with low lease rates.
